Control Cable Anchor Bracket Replacement

After buying a boat from someone who swore it was in perfect order I found out that the control cable anchor bracket was held together with JB Weld and zip ties. I purchased and replace the bracket but now I am having issues realigning the shifter. I have it pretty close so that when the control is in neutral so is the transmission. I am having some issues with the throttle not backing down after putting it in gear and giving it some gas. The control will return to neutral but the engine stays rev'd pretty high. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

The specific question asked, and needs to be answered, is what motor do you have, and what year is it?

The throttle cable is a separate adjustment, usually you put the lever in full forward, then pull it back to the neutral detent, and adjust the cable so it holds the throttle lever lightly against the stop. It sounds like yer a few turns off.

Set the gears to neutral by moving the shift slider with the cable barrel removed. The throttle handle should be in neutral as well. Now turn the shift cable barrell nut until it is centered in the clamp. Now adjust the throttle cable barrel nut until it pushes the throttle closed, with a bit of preload.

Thanks for all the answers, you were correct. I was a few turns of the barrel off. I have adjusted it all the way to the end and the prop still slightly spins while in Neutral but I haven't tested it under load yet. The motor is a Merc 150 VR4 1988-89 I believe. At least at this point I can get the choke on while in Neutral and get the boat to start.
