control box question

hi i am new here and i have a 1982 ebbtide dynatrac 176ss with a 150 evinrude v6. i went to the lake yesterday and first noticed that i had hardly any power in full reverse. then i put it in forward and had to go all the way and push hard to get power. at first i suspected the cable but i disconnected it from the motor and the remote and there is no play nor resistance. i adjusted the cable and now it will go full power but when i pull it back to neutral, the throttle does not return back to idle. so i put the cable back like it was and the handle moves over half way before it starts to move the throttle linkage on the motor. could i have a bad control box?

Re: control box question

I suppose that is possible, ebbtide. Are you aware that there is a block on the throttle when in reverse to prevent over-revving?

yes i knew that about reverse but the motor does not start to rev until the lever in forward is over half way down.

Re: control box question

it sounds to be that the cable is shot. you are going to have to open the control box either way.

Re: control box question

well i have already been in the control box and the cable seems fine. the controls just seem real sloppy. shifting is firm but not the throttle

How are you checking the cable? Unhook at the engine and push it in all the way and pull it back out with the contrlo box in neutral. It should only have about 1/4" free play

Re: control box question

i have about 1/4 or less unhooked from the control box and connected to the motor, but i have about 1 1/2" of play when unhooked from the motor but hooked to the box in neutral.

Sounds like a cable will be the place to start

Re: control box question

well i just dont understand how i could have a bad cable when there is only play on the control box side. the cable is solid and moves quite freely. i have unhooked both ends now and i and my brother was at each end and there is no play in the cable whatsoever. has anybody else ever had this problem? i adjusted the cable to where it will pull WOT but it wont pull the throttle back closed to idle. it pulls it part of the way but not fully. when i open the control box i dont really know what to check to be worn out so if anybody could help i appreciate it greatly.......im having lake withdraws:(

Re: control box question

I just installed the cables on my J150 (1994) this weekend, theres a set proceedure in the service manual, after following that it worked perfect.
I think you'd be well served getting hold of the factory service manual.

Re: control box question

i found the problem inside my control box. is there a way to tell which OMC controls i have. it is a white box with the high idle lever on top and takes the 479 cables.
