Hi,

I just bought an old (1983) Johnson 70, that came with (a much newer) control box and cables. The problem is that the cables are too short so I need to buy new ones.

I spoke to someone (probably a mistake) who made me concerned about replacing the cables, as he said the control box was "full of springs and stuff" and that it is not easy to replace the cables in the box.

Is it really as difficult as he says? I am really looking to see if anyone has (or has a link to) a diagram of the control box so that I can get it back together if I have trouble.

Thanks,
- Hal

Hal...you can get extension cables if the harness is to short. Then you wouldn't have to worry about taking the box apart. Check with your local John/Rude dealer.

5' extendion PN 173770 $43.87

10' PN 173771 $59.95

20' PN 174800 $89.95

Hi,
No, the electrical cable is plenty long, it's the two control cables that are too short. I just bought new one today, and hopfully will be able to figure out how to get them into the control box without making a mess. Then maybe boating this weekend...
- Hal

When I refurbished my old pontoon boat, I took mine apart to install carpet and relocate the control box to the rail. It didn't seem all that difficult to me. I have some mechanical ability, but had never even started an outboard let alone worked on one.
Get a manual. I have both the Seloc and the Clymer manuals since neither one covered everything I thought I needed to know.
If you could find an OMC shop manual, I think it might be worth buying. I wish I had.

OK Hal....misread yer post....Make sure the control cables are long enough that they don't bind when turning. Your realy supposed to have a loop in the control cables before they go into the engine. The loop keeps the cables from getting into a tight bend.

Hal....no....if you take the control box apart to install the new control cables, springs and nuts and bolts won't go flying everywhere. Just watch how you take the old cables out and intall the new ones.
