Contaminated Gas Problem

I have a problem with water and other substances in my gas tank. Currently have a fuel filter that looks like an oil filter that collects water and other substances. Will installing a remote filter cannister (gas/water seperater) do anything more than the current gas filter that came as standard equipment on my merc 454 engine?

Re: Contaminated Gas Problem

If it's bigger it will take out more crappola before you need to change it. You could also run both as long as you still get decent fuel pressure . . . Are you saying you have an ongoing issue? or one that is due to a one time contamination issue? If it is the latter then forget the new filter and replace all of your existing fuel. If it is the former, then maybe a bigger and/or seperate one is a good idea. If you add one, I would go with a good water seperator like a Racor, with a see through bowl and a drain petcock (don't drain into bilge . . . )

No

The filter that QC posted a pic of is for outboard setups ONLY. They are not approved for use in enclosed engine compartments.

Re: Contaminated Gas Problem

The one you want looks identical except it has a metal and not see-through bowl:

The complete assembly with metal bowl... 320R-RAC-02 is UL listed and USCG accepted. Be sure to specify the correct combination of filter and metal or see-thru bowl for your gasoline inboard or outboard engine.

..I'm about to install this one on my 7.4 MerCruiser too.

Re: Contaminated Gas Problem

You know I went to the experts at Williams Oil filter Service Company in Tacoma. I asked the same thing. They are a major Racor and Baldwin distributor.

I found the correct Racor model that would work on my 7.4L Mercruiser.

It's a little longer so I would have to modify the bracket to keep the Racor bowl from contacting the fuel pump below. The filter plus bowl was about $40. For that price I can buy 6 Baldwin BF791 filters (the equiv to the Merc filter)

They would also sell me the replacement Racor filter for about $20 (about 3 times the price of the BF791)

I don't think the Racor is going to last longer than the 6 Baldwins or even 3! I'm probably going to replace the filter every year anyway and I'll always carry a spare BF791.

They told me that I would be money ahead just using the Baldwin and they sell both. I use Baldwin filters in everything I own.

The Stock Factory Filter will do the Same Job,............

Just Keep Changing it.....

Matter of Fact,....... I believe NAPA has a Filter that includes a Drain in the bottom of it,.....
It looks Just like the Factory Can, except with a Drain fitting......
I found it wouldn't clear the motor mount in Mine,..... But it Might work on Your's.......
