Haha, I like the response for the guy that asked why it happened.

Just glad none of my containers were on that ship; work is already slow enough......

That bulb is part of the keel. That design allows the ship to move thru the water easier. I do not know all the hydrodynamics involved, but there is still quite a bit more structure not seen.

creates a great bow wake for wave jumping. And if your motor stalls and won't start no matter how hard you pull it, it will push your 13' whaler off to one side. Not saying how I know nor admitting to growing up in a harbor town....

Thx Titanium, was leaning toward sonar, but on a transport seemed a bit expensive. Maclin, we both learned something. Gibletts, how close to the great barrier reef are you? Experience speaking? Home Cookin', You'd probably jump out of a perfectly good airplane given the chance.

I am a retired Chief Engineer and this is a very busy topic on several of the sites that I visit. It seems as though the hull is starting to fracture due to the stress of being on the rocks. If it does break up there will be one hell of a mess to clean up. It has been reported that the Captain of the ship has already been arrested.

I think this is aground off New Zealand, which is a long way from the GBR. Not too sure how close to Aukland where Gibletts is--which by the way is a great town in a great country. Many years ago I hitch-hiked both islands before heading to Aus (and the GBR). The country is beautiful and the people are great. But it's ecologically fragile so this could be a big deal. If this is a freighter and not a tanker, though, they should be able to pump out most of its fuel oil.

so.. say you found one of these floating along, and managed to get it to land, and open it. Say its filled with stuff that didnt get hurt by the saltwater, and falling off the ship.

would that stuff be yours? is there laws against keeping it?

Re: Container ship vs reef last week

Im in Auckland, thats a little north to where this boat is, it is grounded only about 12 miles off shore and leaking fuel oil, it has already made quite a mess of the beaches. Not withstanding the boat is now on a precarious 20deg list it is difficult for the salvors to get the rest of that oil off because the ships engines are down so no heating, and apparently that fuel oil becomes very viscous when it cools down and is difficult to pump. A lot of containers have ended up in the water and on the beach, they still remain property of the shipping company for now, and police are warning people to keep there hands off.

Re: Container ship vs reef last week

there are international laws and there are laws of the countries (and states) where it might wash up. We have a statute on "estrays and drifts" requiring warrants issued to three freeholders for an appraisal--a very old and seldom used statute. It is in the Code of Virginia today, and it's in a copy of the code, verbatim, from 1849.
There are those who believe, regardless, in the God-given right to plunder.
An insurance company that pays for lost cargo or vessels sometimes becomes the owner of it.
People will say that the first person to tie a line from the vessel to the shore gets to keep it, but that's not really true.
Sometimes the person who salvages cargo or a vessel doesn't own it but has a lien for his costs that he can recover from the value of it.
You would be amazed how often containers fall off the ships (until you look at how they are stacked!) and even more surprized when you hit one that is awash just below the surface-a beautiful 50' sport fishing boat went down just a few weeks ago that probably hit one. A container full of Doritos washed up on Hatteras last year or so and the natives got to keep them.
the law of salvage is big business here--the Titantic cases were in our courts for years.

regardless of the law it's the stuff dreams are made of. I have spent much of my spare time on a barrier island and encountered a few wrecks myself. Yo ho ho.

there used to be a commercial on tv.....with a kid and his father out boating, the father throws some garbage overboard, and the son asks "when you throw that over....where does it go?" the father replies "away".
if and when that ship breaks up.....you all know where the mess is going to go! (away)
