Hi, I have a 2007 Mercury 5.0L carbed alpha gen II sn 1A080231.
I've recently replaced the oil pressure sender assembly, thermostat, and oil pressure sensor, as well as impeller, caps/rotor, and plugs.
Then I had the temperature switch and diode assembly replaced at the shop because it was not starting.
Upon returning from shop, I connected hose and went to start to make sure it started. When turning the key and starting, there is a continuous beep. Looking at the wiring, we noticed that the shop did not connect the temperature wire, and once reconnected, the temp gauge works properly, and the beeping continued. We then unplugged the wire under the gear oil reservoir and the beeping stopped. Took the boat out, and it drove at 4400 RPMS @ WOT, as well as good oil pressure and temperature for about 30 minutes without any issues as far as I could tell, no clicking sounds, engine sounded and ran super smooth (first time out since changing the sparks / rotor, etc.) No gear oil in the bilge afterwards or anything like that.
I spoke with another mechanic who said it should be fine to drive the boat with the sensor disconnected until he could look at it - just to keep an eye on the reservoir. Just looking for a 2nd opinion in this - is it possible that there is something else causing the alarm other than the gear oil? Possible the shop could have caused some type of short somewhere else?
I was thinking I'd drain the lower unit to check the oil and then refill just to make sure, and also see if I can see if there is any gunk in the bottom of reservoir that is messing with the float. Any advice greatly appreciated, I don't exactly speak "boat engine" so I want to make sure I'm not getting hosed by the shops.
