Thundercrafts were pretty low-end and that one doesn't appear to be well maintained. I'd be surprised if there wasn't rot. That coupled with the OMC....means I wouldn't touch it.

Wasn't sure where Thundercrafts stood but I have a bad case of footitis on the ski boat. Sure looked like a promising upgrade from the current 1972 15 foot trihull with an electric shift hanging on the back.

I have never been an I/O kinda guy though I like the simplicity of an outboard motor.

You probably don't want an OMC. Stick with Mercruiser or Volvo. Also, you may want to avoid I/O's if you're going the cheap route. Catching up on all the deferred maintenance will really cost you. In the <$2000 price range I really recommend an aluminum hull with an outboard. Eliminates a lot of the potential pitfalls.

Maintenance doesn't scare me to much I can do that on my own. I am sure I can figure it out for the most part. I was kind of scared of it being OMC drive but I have had great service out of my electric shift almost 40 years old now and still starts with the first twist of the key. (All though when its cold outside it will usually die) but thats simple choke it down restart it give it a second to warm up and off we go.

I am just a big fan of the KISS rule all though I/o should be quiter and smoother I would think than an old two stroke, the question is would it be worth it for me to upgrage 2 feet to an I/O if I am going to lose space on the inside of the boat from the motor?

No one boat will do it all Hence the reason we have a 28' pontoon the 15' fish and ski. I am looking at getting rid of the fish and ski to get a larger Ski boat, and then looking at getting a bass tracker or some sort of Aluminum for fishing only.

Sorry, I wouldn't take the boat for free. The OMC with a rough-condition boat that wasn't known for quality when it was new. If you are looking to step up to an I/O, fina at least a 19'-21' model to make it worth your while.

If it were my money I would pass on it. Only you can make that choice though.

Why wouldn't you consider a larger fish-n-ski only, instead of a ski boat plus a fishing boat? I currently have a 15 ft fish-n-ski and can see your point about it being on the small side (though ours has served us well it's getting replaced very soon). But I'd think an 18 ft or larger fish-n-ski would be a good boat for both purposes. Just my opinion, and worth every penny you paid for it.

i had a @1987 thundercraft. it was ok , but it was a beater when i got it. we had fun with it, though. it was an outboard with a built in gas tank. i was told thundercraft's were canadian ski boats.

Re: Considering buying this

i bought an 88 15ft a few weeks ago. We only have a small suv and a small budget. Picked it up for 2000, replaced the seats and carpet. Seats were about 200 and carpet was 30. has a 70hp evinrude and omc drive (lever). I put a bimini top on it and throwing a trolling motor off the front. we are a 3 person family with a one year old and there is just enough room for my wife to sit in the back and play with my child under the top while i fish from the front. For the price i think i did ok. i would love a bigger boat, but then it wouldn't fit in my garage :)

I'll take some pics and throw them up. For me a boat is a boat is a boat. If it looks clean, and runs good, its good. Maybe it wasn't the cadillac of boats, but i wouldn't know if it was back then. It floats, look good, and i get to have fun with the fam. For something like a boat, i think paying for a name is especially overrated (maybe not so much for a motor or the mechanics of it) but the boat itself..... if it floats, go play!

PLEASE start your own thread instead of hijacking one that is over 18 months old................. it is better to start new.
