Confused

I have a mercury o/b on my boat with a serial number of C165959 but the lower unit has mariner 150 stickers on it. I replaced one of the head gaskets earlier this year and the guy at the boat place told me i have a 200 hp block with a 150 hp top end. I'm trying to rebuild the carbs on it but i'm not sure what i'm dealing with. The head gasket part number was for a 1989 150 hp and i replaced the fuel pump with a part number for a 150. Can someone shed some light on what it is i'm working with or how i can find out for sure? The number on the carbs says WH, but no number following. I have a subscription to Seloc, it says a C carburetor is single barrel square bowl and a B is 2 barrel round bowl, but mine are 2 barrel square bowl. I hope this is enough info.

Yo. why not just take the old one to the store and have them tell you what you got and buy a new one and not waste time with numbers and books and all dat........He said dat, she listed dat one book says this and another book says not,,,,waste of time.

Sounds like you have what we often refer to as a 'FrankenMerc'.

A Frankenstein engine put together with parts of a couple of different models/HP parts.

This makes it very difficult to decide which service manual applies, often a couple, one for the short bla=ock assy and another for the intake/carbs.

You can check the engine serial # looking thru the pages of the Merc parts site and hopefully determine what the short block is.

The carbs can be a bit trickier to identify, but it is still possible. You are going to have to look at each one a lot closer on all sides to find the #'s. Post them here, hopefully another of these guys will recognise the # and let you know what it can from, otherwise you will be spending a LOT of time at the Merc parts site going thru a lot of engines to find that #.

Once you identify the engines your parts came from then check the first thread at the top of this forum, partway down you will find a link to the Merc service manuals. Download the manuals for each of your parts.

Now you understand why we discourage any modifications to engines, it makes very difficult for another owner to identify and repair.

Don't be discouraged. The seloc manool is covering l6's and v6's. there are no single barrel carbs on any v6 that I know of. The effort to cover a large number of motors tends to lose important information, or confuse it. Get the real manual(s) you need.

There's 3 basic versions, that being 2.0L, 2.4L, and 2.5L. Bores are different. They are enough alike that most of the time the crank can be swapped between them.

Then there's vertical reed block and horizontal reed block.

Then there's porting, pistons, carbs, etc that are different for the different HP's, and usually only run well if matched. Putting 200 hp carbs on a 150 usually gives you a sick 145.

So, gather data. What is the bore diameter? What are the numbers on the carbs? Horizontal or Vertical reeds. With that, this community could probably guess pretty close what it is.

Oh, and not all of us discourage improving yer engine if you have the moxy to do it.

Thanks for the input guys. The numbers on the carbs are 1374-5427 and 41-1a3498.
