I am trying to work out the exact year and model of my Johnson outboard, I have drawn a complete blank on model numbers, not on the core plug or any the plate on swivel bracket,so now I'm trying to find defining features on the engine.I read that a looper engine only has one power pack, what are differences between looper and cross flow I'm clutching at straws now, very frustrating but I don't want to take it to someone give them a load of money only for them to tell me what I know, witch is nothing, any help would be fantastic. Pictures very welcome

Pictures of your motor would help also. If the core plugs dont have anything stamped in, they most likely were replaced at some time. Is this motor new to you, as in, you just bought it?

Okay ...it appears to be an early 80's V-4 with the bubble back exhaust. The "true" answer will be the carbs. If you remove the airbox and look at the front of the carbs..... there will be a size cast into the carbs (covered by the airbox)

I believe the 140 carbs are 1 -3/8 on the front. Regardless of what the motor is 135,140 or other...... it is a great motor. Just maintain it and keep it supplied with 50:1 (Regular gas:Tcw3 oil)fuel mixture.

ADDED - My guess is an 80-84 model year

I've checked and the carbs are 1-3/8 so will that information be able to get me any closer to getting the right coil and manuals ?

model identification 2.jpgYou have two threads going for the same engine. Best to keep all your comments on just one thread so the folks that are trying to help you can do that. It's not to your advantage to scatter your questions on two threads. It's a 78 or 79 model based on the choke solenoid on the top of the airbox cover.

1978 and 79 140s used 1 3/8 carbs, from 1980 up the size was 1 5/16. 1980 up also had no chokes

Bubbleback is a reference to the bubble bulge on the exhaust plate cover between the banks of cylinders
