Conflicting advise on head gasket

I am reinstalling the head on an 85 15hp Johnson. I have received conflicting advise and was curious to see if there was an experienced OMC mechanic in this group could clear it up.

The OMC gaskets have a self-sealing compound on them and have traditionally require no sealant or adhesive for installation. However, my local repair shop said that BRP/OMC put out a repair/service(?) bulletin that says to use gasket adhesive. I believe it was for longevity...to protect angainst future leaks or failures.

Can anyone confirm this bulletin and its direction?

I am not an OMC tech but the advice I recieved from one of the best was.

If the gasket is not sticky from the manufacture with sealant allready on it, then lightly coat the block and head with oil and install.

I wouldn't use oil but if you use any sealer at all use the BRP "Gasket Sealer" (not adheasive M) that has the brush in the lid. Do not use any sealer from an aersol spray can.

I've never heard of such a bulletin, but there was a bulliten saying not to add any sealant to the factory coating. In fact they were marked do not use sealant. That's not to say they haven't changed since I was there.

I use OMC/BRP Gasket Sealant on the uncoated ones.

Just my 2c.

How can you tell coated from uncoated? The one I received was grey. The one I removed was blue...and left some blue behind on the head and case.
Will it say on the bag?

self sealing gaskets are normally double packaged and have a tacky texture if its smooth or feels dry and paper like it prob needs sealant

The coated ones may be orange or blue or? They will have a shiny look.

I go the easy way, BRP gasket sealer on all of them, easy to remember, and what can it hurt.
