Found damage from deer season

Yesterday while waiting for a friend, I took a walk around my boat. First time this year. I first looked at my outdrive to make sure I didn't see anything busted from the freezing. Everything looked good until I saw this hole just under my swimdeck. I undone my cover and got on the back deck to the engine compartment. Yep, the hole went clear through the transom. Then I noticed my trim pump that I installed last year was dented.

Apparently a stray slug hit my boat :( . Guess I should be glad it didn't enter my house. I called the sheriff and he made a report. He said it is possible my home owners insurance may pay for the damage. I'll have to call them tomorrow. Sad thing is I know my deductable will be more than the damage if I repair it myself. If I have someone else do it, I will have to wait for months.

I'm just glad I caught it now while it is in the preseason. I guess the damage could have been worse if it was below the water line.

Hopefully I can drill the hole out in the transom and epoxy a hardwood dowell into it. The trim motor I think will have to be replaced,,,,again. its not dented too bad, I'll have to wait until I can get the batteries back in to see if it is just dented or damaged.

HMMM I wonder? Hey Barlow, where abouts do YOU go hunting? :D

That really is kind of scary, When things like that happen I always think about what if the kids were out back playing.

Barlow, I think my trim pump stopped the exit path. After going through about 3" of fiberglass and wood it slowed it down enough. I looked for an exit, but none to be found.

This just aggrivates the holy crap out of me. People should know where they are shooting. Guess it is not going to be long before the woods next to me is going to be a no hunting zone. Just too many residential sites going in.

My house did get blasted last week -- only from the neighbor kid (19 year old idiot) firing a red paintball rifle. The Mom came to clean up the mess. Go figure!

Re: Found damage from deer season

I did a walkaround of the toon today, must be getting that time of year again. Fortunatly my serface scan revealed only one thrashed seat...All of a sudden that don't seem so bad. Sure hope your trim pump faired ok but other than that Sounds like ya may have been fortunate. As for the deductable...Tell em the only guy ya could find to help ya fix it was in Minnesota around the fifth of june and if they pay the gas bill and repair bill I won't bill them for the minnow's on the sea trial. We can pad the bill enoufgh to cover the deductable and beer...I'm serious about not chargin them for the bait. ;)

For the hole, your epoxied dowel thing sounds like it would be easy and permanent. In the mean time, another way to plug holes, above and below the water line, is to use an appropriate size stainless bolt and locking nut. Stainless and rubber washers on each side of the transom to seal (rubber against transom, stainless against nut and bolt head). Basically the same principle as a drain plug, but permanent (or semi permanent as your waiting to do the permanent fix).

I agree with you - the hole is easy enough to fix and I wouldn't wait for a shop to get to it. And I also agree it probably isn't worth making an insurance claim. The dented cylinder- hope it isn't broken.

Re: Found damage from deer season

Might want to be careful about filing small hoimeowners claims. I've heard horror stories about people not being able to renew homeowners ins. after making a few small claims. A couple of links I quickly picked off google (didn't do a thorough job).

http://www.azcentral.com/home/hb101/articles/0823homebuying23.html
http://realtytimes.com/rtcpages/20030923_beware.htm
http://www.insurance.com/FAQs/autoFAQDetail.aspx/index/3

From the first link:

"Minimize hassles of home insurance

..... However, homeowner's insurance is less available and more expensive than in years past. Some homes may be virtually uninsurable.

Most likely to be affected are:

• Buyers who have made an insurance claim inquiry, or claims, in the past five years. "

Note the part I bolded: apparently there's a shared database (Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange, or CLUE) that insurance companies use when evaluating clients (or potential ones). My understanding is that even if you just inquire about a claim, it might very well be entered into the database (and potentially used against you) even if you don't actually file the claim!

Also from the first link above:
"The Homeowners may be able to obtain a five-year claims history at no cost by requesting the report from their insurance agent. Or homeowners can purchase a Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange (CLUE) report."

Just a heads up, any iBoats insurance agents out there who can provide more info on this issue?

If the Transom was thick enough to slow the slug/bullet to only "Dent" the trim motor, the expanded bullet should be laying in there somewhere....just for the sake of finding it..
