Re: compression

Sorry to tell you this.
Sounds like it is time for a complete tear-down. One thing you can try before doing that is decarbonize it,to be sure it's not a stuck ring.
Buy some fogging fluid from the marina, and go thru the steps on the can.
If the compression doesn't come-up to 20% from the rest of the cylenders, it's time for new rings.
And yes, it's going to be expensive (around
$400.00 (very rough est.And contingiant on colateral damage),and will be down for
3 or 4 weeks.

------------------
I came, I saw, I Have No CLUE!

Re: compression

CC, first off don't run it, you could trash the engine block. Next look at the side on the engine block where the pistons are. You'll see access plates with 10-12 bolts in them. Pull the one on the cylinder with low compression. This will give you a look at at least 1/2 of that piston and ring. You also be able to look and see some of the cylinder walls. You may be able to see a broken ring. If this doesn't show you what you need to see pull the head. Run your finger around the cylinder walls feeling for scores. Pulling the head is easy just remove the head bolts and knock the head loose with the heel of your hand. This is first thing any dealer will do. If you've already done it, it will only take a mechanic a few minutes to tell you what it needs to rebuild.

It's possible to pull the engine down, bore the one cylinder, replace that piston and rings along with honing the other cylinders walls and install new rings on the other pistons for about 800.00. The problem is with an engine that old the first thing you'll hear is "while we're in there" we should replace the bearings and list will continue till your looking at a 3 grand rebuild.
