Re: Completly rebuilding my 30' pontoon boat any ideas??

Appreciate it, I will look into that sheet foam next time at home depot. I just ran a compression test on engine and it came out 98-90-95-60, does anyone know what the compression is supposed to be on a 1989 110 Johnson tracker?

Re: Completly rebuilding my 30' pontoon boat any ideas??

I have decided to just keep the motor "as is" on there till it goes. But I have some progress updates to post.
looking at the deck and pondering what to do with it over the last week, I decided to fiberglass the existing plywood. The parts of plywood that were buckling, you can see in the pictures, I tore up the first ply in the area. I took elmers wood filler and filled in all the gaps to create a smooth fiberglassable surface. I walked to the whole deck with a electric sander and smoothed out any rough spots i could find. I will tell you though if anyone ever is sanding wood with oil stains on it, be prepared to have your sandpaper ruined by the oil clumping up on the grit pretty quick.
Now that I have a nice clean and smooth surface to fiberglass, I question how much fiberglass resin I am going to need to coat a 28'x 8 area of plywood???? I have heard that it will absorb a lot of the resin. I am guessing about 5 gallons.

Another Item I have found for the boat is a center console, its 200$ with a tach and speedometer and stainless steel steering wheel. its about 4x3wide, needs to be cleaned up. I originally was going to fabricate my own fiberglass center console. So the question i have is, has anyone fabricated there own console, and if so is it worth doing? im guessing the wood and fiberglass is going to tally up a bill.... or is $200 worth a already built and decently sized one?

60, that's very bad news and possibly expensive to ignore gas prices being what they are.

The pink or blue styrofoam is very hard stuff, I think it will do the job.

Do you relize how much time and effort not to mention the $ its going to take to fiberglass all that? You need to slow down price out CCD plywood and galvanized deck bolts. Do it right the 1st time.

Your motor is junk that 4th reading is over 15lbs off of the 1st reading. So if you expect to get "Performance" out of that motor, think again. What you need to do is drop as much weight as possible. Skip pressure treated wood, and the fiberglass/bondo idea and just get new CCD.

Don't use the foam on your deck, it will trap moisture and over time get real nasty. I redid my 24' Tritoon in '08 and used carpet from pontoonstuff.com. Now after two year of fishing I wish I would have used something like MariDeck vinyl flooring because of stains.

If the console is in good shape, it's a steal @ $200.00.

once moisture gets into the ply (from underneath) the wood filler will soften up than glass wont be bonded. than youll be doing it right the second time..

why is it people never have the time to do it right the first time but find the time to do it right the second time.....

Yep. Use stuff meant for pontoon boats and you'll be happier and come out ahead financially. You should strongly consider a kit from here. http://pontoonstuff.com/

Re: Completly rebuilding my 30' pontoon boat any ideas??

Well I bought the center console for 200$, quite the steal was right. It has a great SS wheel, mounted spot light, all the fiberglass is in awesome shape... Just needs some comet and rubbing compound. As for the wood I am going to sand and finish off with this epoxy-resin i have for making clocks and tables. The steering cable locked up so I also need a new steering cable, anyone know of any good priced ones??? And the current seat cushions I am going to have reupholstered.

For the rest of the furniture i was planning on building for the boat, turns out when you price out all the material you need to build it your self It is about the same price as buying it new from the factory. Ridiculous how much the foam for the cushions is, I can understand the marine vinyl, but gee-sh.

a1nowell-- they were referring to using the foam inside the tool box I am insulating to make into a cooler. I am fiberglassing and gel coating the deck with a semi grit so you dont slip on it. which I have looked into the price of putting new plywood and carpet down, not much different and gel coat will look a hell of a lot nicer.

I already purchased my LED kit from Usledsupply.com, great deal i think 150$ for 16' of RGB waterproof led strip, control box capable of going with the beat of the music, 25 waterproof connectors, and 5 extra short led strips to place throughout. great deal, I hooked them up and made a video of them in action on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mxyLPbc308

Whatever glass, gelcoat, paint, carpet, vinyl, etc. etc. you put on the top of the deck plywood will help keep moisture in the wood longer.
And it will get in to the wood from below or from the top via micro or worse cracks. Any 'hard" coating will develope cracks due to thermal expansion of the wood.
I would deck it with "marine use" pressure treated deck boards dried under cover for several weeks then stained with an oil based stain to all surfaces. Treated wood, when dry is not noticably heavier than regular wood.
Put the console all the way forward to open the rest of the deck area to the party.
Use regular patio chairs and furniture from your house so more or less can be added as needed for whatever the days activity dictates.
Forget trying to make the truck tool box into a cooler. By the time you add enough insulation to insulate against the Florida summers and wont get busted up, you wont have much room for the beer and ice.
Next to copper, aluminum makes the best radiators, radiates cold just as good as heat.

Re: Completly rebuilding my 30' pontoon boat any ideas??

The boat has marine plywood on it already, I am going to treat is this weekend with a sealant. As for the bottom I am going to either spray the bottom of the deck board with a waterproof sealant and/or cover with aluminum sheets.

As for the console, why would you put it all the way to the front of the boat? to be different? the problems I see with that is one, the console would be 25' from the engine, and two the party would be around the engine.

The Truck tool box is Huge, I would think 1" of insulation between the aluminum and ice water would be sufficient for a party. I know it wouldn't be the greatest cooler for keeping ice for days, but I was going for more the aesthetic value out of it. Also thinking about mounting 2 seats to the lid of it, of course positioned so that you don't freeze the back of your knees.

Just found a killer deal for a new Fuse box 12 circuit Blue Sea Systems w/ cover w/o neg bus. 36$ at sears online, well actually I was walking in the store and used the in store computer to find it.

Would concider spending the money and put alum plate down, after taking the plywood up. Never have trouble with bad wood, it would be in need in about 3 years.

3 years? For what?

What is the cost of aluminum vs marine plywood? Anyone know what the weight difference is?

My man......you realy need to rethink that floor...... From the photos, no offense, but its time to replace it. I used poly form ply. They use it to make concrete walls and bridges. It has a thin layer of fiberglass on both sides and you can contact any heavy equipment construction company and ask them for their "scraps." I got mine for 7 bucks a sheet. It's waterproof and 3/4 inch thick.
Other then that..good luck and have a cold one ready for me.

i painted the top of the poly form with Lowes 25yr deck paint. I also threw play sand on top of the wet paint for a non skid surface and painted over that again. WORKS GREAT and it was cheeeeeep. used regular 2x4's and painted them as welll. 4 months on the water in a slip and ZERO ISSUES

100 gallon stock tank from Tractor Supply is now the largest and coolest livewell on Lake Lewisville! Custom filter keeps shad alive for days!! Used a pool noodle to keep the water from splashing out of the livewll. All new stainless bolts and screws. I ordered the screws from an online pontoon website and they were junk. Home depot outdoor HD screws did the trick. Not decking screws but ones in a plastic see through box. I even beefed up the supports with 2x2's painted with the Lowes deck paint. SOLID
