Compatibility VHF <-> GPS Via NMEA V2/3

I have the following two devices:

Garmin GPSMAP 185 Sounder
ICOM IC-M422 VHF Radio

I have wiring diagrams for both devices and making the connections is not a problem. My concern is with a potentially incompatible data format. Here is why:

The Garmin 185 manual says it supports NMEA 0183 V2.0 (GPGGA, GPGLL, GPGSA, GPMRB, GPMRC, GPRTE, GPWPL and GPBOD)

The ICOM manual says the NMEA IN supports 0183 V2 or 3.01 (RMC, GGA, GNS and GLL). That looks pretty good and therefore it seems the radio should be able to read the GPS position once I make the proper connections.

However, the ICOM NMEA OUT supports 0183 V3.01 (DSC and DSE). It therefore appears that the Garmin GPS will not be able to receive and plot GPS data received by the ICOM radio. Is this correct?

I have a Garmin 76S (NMEA 2.3) connected to a Uniden radio (NMEA 3.01) and it works fine. I think you will be okay.

Yes. If your chart plotter is not able to interpret the DSC and DSE sentences being sent from the radio, it will not respond to them. I suggest you inquire with GARMIN to verify.
