Commercial Floor Wax...?

Hi everyone ! I have been lurking and reading here for a while and I finally want to post a question...

I am not a real experienced boater having owned just 3 boats in my lifetime...
Right now I have a 1996 Starcraft 1700 OB and needless to say, the gelcoat is getting a tad dull...
I have a friend who has owned many boats and has told me that what he does in such a case is to first scrub it down with Comet and a Scotchbrite pad (and water of course)...
Then he follows that by applying a commercial grade, liquid floor wax...
I have heard of and read many posts about using "Future" liquid wax, some love it and some not so much...
According to what I have been told, using a brand name, commercial wax makes the difference and that it does not yellow and lasts for years...

I am turning to you all to help me confirm this or not....anyone out there know anything about this..?

Thanx to you all for any help given :)

Welcome to iboats!

Forget the liquid floor wax.

It will not last and then when you really want a shine you will have to cut through that too.

Rubbing compound, Polishing compound and regular car wax which should all be accomplished with a rotary polisher (not a cheap orbital one). Oh did I forget to mention the hours of hard work and elbow grease!!!

For sure maintenace is the key factor is preserving your gelcoat. I have been an active rv'er for 25 years and when I started to look at boats I could not believe the condition of alot of them. Rv's are the same way . There are people that just buy them and use them and do not do any maintenace and after 5-10 years trade them in for a new one and move on. They have had no maintenace at all done to them and you can sure tell. I myself believe in maintenace from day one on any product . For instance in my rv when I park that evening I clean it down :)

The only advantage to this is the new buyer of a poor maintained product who wants to do some work can get a great deal.

Re: Commercial Floor Wax...?

your buddy is incorrect.......sorry.

the comet will dull the shine with out a good buffing after......so will the scotch brite.

you can use those products on your hull....but they you have to buff after.....so why not use correct products in the first place and save a step?
