It's hard to tell MrWill, but it looks like that second picture is just below Pearce Bay after you go through the rapid and make that hard right turn? And is the bottom pic Iceberg Canyon? You said you took a 3 day trip, did you put in at Diamond Creek with the Hualapais? That's my favorite stretch of river from there down to Separation Canyon. It's not the most scenic and it's doesn't have the biggest rapids, but it's hands down the most remote and I like that. You also don't need a permit to put in at Diamond Creek which is cool. Did you stop at Travertine Grotto? Good pictures, wish I was there right now!

Re: Come to Lake Mead and Win Prizes!

Our trip started just down from Lava Rapids...we flew into the Bar 10 Ranch...took a helicopter into canyon and hopped on the raft there. I don't remember too many names...we did stop at a waterfall that we had to climb some ladders to get to (that was Travertine Grotto, right)...the last night we stayed below the last rapids...about 1.5 hours (drifting) upstream of Separation Canyon.
Link to trip map

Some trip pictures

I just got the pictures from the disposable water proof cameras...will be uploading those pictures soon.

-JMW

Okay, you put in at the Whitmore wash helipad. I didn't know there were companies that started trips there. Very cool. The Bar 10 is kinda cool huh. This little oasis in the middle of nothingness. Those Bell 206's they fly from there create quite the little dust storm when they take off. :D

Yep, Travertine Grotto is the only hikeable waterfall below Lava. Glad you had a good time. Thanks for sharing the photos.

They put in the rafts at Lee's Ferry...the 6 day trip ends where my 3 day trip started from. It was a fantastic experience. My mom and I are planning to hike rim to rim next May. I still can't beleive how many visitors only see half the canyon (upper gorge only).

I wish I could talk my wife into moving .

-JMW

I hope you guys are still following this thread. . . I found this after going through about a 1000 photos. Really, my oldest is working on a project and he needed some old pics, so I was digging. This is probably '86, so 20 years ago. I am sitting on the roof of a Houseboat as we exit Columbine Falls (the little tiny white line in the left of the pic). This is the day I dove off the top in there (noted above). Amazing to think of now, because I have fought the Tamarisk too DR, with a boat . . .

Dang QC, I was still in High School then. :D Great picture though. Absolutely amazing how different it looks. If you ever get the chance there are Anasazi petroglyphs at the top of the falls on the canyon walls. There is a trail from the right as you're looking at the fall. It's a great hike, great fun for bouldering if you're into that.
