i have a 73 evinrude 50 horse. when i lift the cold start lever up, it will not advance the throttle but just a very tiny amount. it seems to have a lot of slack in it.i was wondering if there was any way to remove the slack from the cable on the remote end.

Re: cold start lever not advancing throttle

If your Rude controls are similar to my 1977 Johnson then the cable used is the main throttle cable. The lever uses a cam inside the control to advance the throttle without the motor being in gear. I would take it apart and inspect for wear/damage, clean and lube but be careful, there could be some components inside that will drop out or even spring loaded.

hi watermann thanks for the input. it should be the same as your control. it is the poweshift 2 controller. i have had it apart several times. i havent really saw anything that looks wrong with it. i almost looks and acts like there is too much slack in the throtle cable on the remote end. the cold lever moves, but by the time it gets all the slack out of the cable, the lever is at the end of its travel.

Sounds like the cable is miss adjusted back on the mtr or the cables are worn.

Check the throttle to see if it has the same slack by using the shift lever. Take off the motor cowl and have someone turn the prop while you throw it into gear and ease the throttle forward while watching to see how much travel you have before the throttle opens up. It almost sounds like you have a cable clamp that is letting the cable sheath slide. If it is a clamp on the motor you should be able to see it. If cable is needing adjustment, you'll be able to tell since the throttle won't open all the way up.
