Cold Blooded Evinrude

My 15 HP Evinrude starts on about the 3rd pull, then dies. At that point it doesn't want to start, taking many many pulls. When it does eventually start it runs fast or slow, depending on how it feels that day I guess....... After it does get running and warms up for several minutes it runs great. A friend said it sounds like a choke problem to him, any ideas? The only choke I know about is my grip on my 15 HP anchor!

how about some model and serial number info this will help narrow things down, could be choke, could be a coil.. etc

My 1975 15 HP Johnson model 15R75C has done the same thing for three years. Mine also fouls plugs. My motor will start the second pull every time, I choke the first pull push the choke to half choke and it starts the second pull then must shut choke off fast and keep motor as fast as it will go in neutral until it gets Warm. If it dies in the first minute will not restart unless I pull the plugs for 30 minutes. After it is warm will run perfect all day but trolling second day will do same thing but may foul plugs where I have to change them. On my motor I have changed the both points and condenser. checked the timing, Checked the fuel pump, and replaced a stuck open thermostat. This week I pulled the carb but everything clean and open. I did adjust the float a little as I think the fuel was a little high allowing too high a fuel level. I was ready to order rings but did a compression check cold and got 120 for top and 115 for bottom cyl. I think that is ok. If I find a fix I will let you know hope you will do same.

When I get a motor of this era in for service I like to do the following and perhaps you can relay the information to me:<br />Spark plug brand and number:<br />When were plugs replaced.<br />Then I run the motor in the barrel see what it is doing, how its acting. I then let it run for 3-4 min in neutral at a faster speed not high rev... I then take off the cover and feel the cylinder head, feel if its warming up or not. I do experience this problem alot with these motors, there are some changes made and some tricks i just dont know how to explain on here. Sometimes the wrong plugs are in place or it may need hotter plugs. <br /><br />I will get back to you with more asap lets diagnose the plug situation then we can go from there. some of these motors are for sure cold blooded.

Right now it has Champion L77JC4 plugs in it, they've been in since last summer. Before you say "Well Duh, change the plugs" there is a reason for it. Not a real good one, but here it is: My best friend died 2 years ago, his wife gave me the boat last June. I took the Evinrude to a repair shop because it truly ran poorly. The shop fixed it and made it run great, I had changed the plugs prior to taking it in. The repair person said that I had stripped the thread on one of the plug seats, I can't remember top or bottom plug. I was warned to be very careful or I'd have to replace the 'power head'? So, I've been afraid to change them since then. But, it's probably a real good idea to, the Marine shop didn't have Champion, they sold me NGK 3579 BZ7HS-10 plugs. They forgot to tell me what the gap should be and I forgot to ask. Do you know? I just don't want to screw it up because the salmon are running right now in the Snake River and I have family coming in before Memorial Day to fish. What to do, what to do

Plugs should be set to .030 if you have standard points and condensor used in th 1974 to 1976 engine. Also do not need to be very tight, Just a little over finger tight.
