Hey my boat wont start and i think its ignition problem..... OMC 4 cly inboard motor. I put in a new coil and then i took a plug wire, stuck it in the coil and a plug on the other end of it. I then touched the threaded part of the plug to the motor and didnt see a spark...and this is a brand new coil!! Also i took a voltmeter and the wires to the coil read 11-12 volts, but read 4 when connected. And the black wire from the distributer goes on the negative side of coil right? thats all i can think of.....

Did you inspect the points and condensor?

Looking all right is a far cry from if they are working properly. Measure the dwell or at a minimum measure the gap. Points can get glazed over after a while. You can measure the dwell by just cranking the engine. Doesn't need to be running.

Open up the distributor and have the high tension lead of the coil with a gap to ground. You can open and close the point manually to create the spark. If you can't, the point are probably bad. You can also just put a test lead to the ground side of the coil and to the ground of the block. When you remove the ground, you should get your spark.

What is the condition of your cap and rotor? Have you changed them recently as well? You really need to change these things if they haven't been changed for awhile.

A shorted condensor will cause the primary circut to be grounded continuously and cause no spark also. 'nutcase
