Im assuming its probably carb related. When coming off of idle, the motor will hesitate for a second as if too much fuel is being dumped. Only coming off of idle. Any where else it doesnt do it but if the engine is in gear, it will almost stall so i have to push through that dead spot rather fast which is not all the good when coming up to a dock if i need a tiny bit of power. Motor is a reman and ive had issues with what i consider low compression but this really is a carb issue i think. Any advice?

what kind of carb is it ?

My Holley had a blown power valve and it had a dead spot like that , but it was also running pig rich and you could just tell something was extremely off.

Ayuh,..... I agree,.... more likely lean, than rich,....
Have you tried turning the idle air screws out just abit,..??
Is the acc. pump, working in time,..??
Hows the fuel filter lookin',..??

In the past I've had some old trucks with the same symptoms and it turned out to be a worn and or dried out accelerator pump, which was an easy fix.
The worst case was that it had ran like that so long it wore the bore out for the plunger which made it junk.
The other suggestions that had been brought up are very plausible also..

Update:
I checked the air fuel screws on each side of the carb and the one closest to the valve cover was 3 half turns out, the other screw was less than one half turn. I set them both with it running and both are equal and it appears to be running a lot better now.

I did however have a heck of a time getting it to stay running when i first fired it up. it would start right up then act as if it was out of fuel. Pump it a couple times and it would start right up then run out again. When looking down the throat it would squirt fuel but im thinking it had dirt or may water in it. After working the carb open and shut ten or twenty times and with carb cleaner it freed up and is running nice. Hardly any hesitation too so we will see.

Thankyou all for the help

It appears that you have a Holley. If that is what you have then try this.
1.5 turns out from lightly seated with the idle mixture screws should idle correctly and with 1-1.5 turns on the idle stop screw.
Any thing much more than these settings usually means it needs to be repaired.
