i just installed a new clutch dog in my '72 25 hp evinrude. i did it as the book said with the line facing toward the forward gear but looking at it i really don't see any difference. i have since bought a used longshaft lower end and upon checking out the gears for wear i noticed the clutch dog was in backwards....does it really matter???

Thanks for any info!

Not really. That line just tells the next guy how it was assembled last time.

Re: Clutch Dog ???

Usually when a manufacturer takes the time to put an identifying mark on a part AND specifys that mark and direction in their service manual, then there is a reason.

Some, not all, engagement dogs are beveled/ramped on their non-thrust side to make it easier to shift OUT of gear. The amount of bevel can be very slight such is not readily noticable to ramped so greatly that if the prop is turned it ratchets, cams over into the next position.

Whenever in doubt always defer to the factory manual.

LOL
Both responses posted almost together

May I clarify, I know to listen to experience, that's how I've learned so much from others that have experience to share.

Because I don't have the total years that F_R has, I have to rely on the book, until someone older and wiser tells us different, trust his experience.
