clutch Dog or ????

Hello all,<br />I have a 60's era 18hp Fastwin. It was running fine then it was "kicking". It sounded like I was running over logs. I almost made it to the dock when WHHHHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE shear pin goes and motor revs up.<br /><br />removed prop in parking lot and shear pin pieces fall out.<br /><br />QUESTION: Could a worn shear exibit the same behavior or is it pretty much the clutch dog.?<br /><br />I have no manual, and am a new outboard owner.<br /><br />Does Napa sell clutch dogs?<br /><br />Thanks

Napa does sound clutch dog, but I think your local J/E dealer does. <br />Your description fits a worn clutch dog 100%, and they're a weak pont on those engines. But I suppose chunks of an old shear pin could conceivably do it too. Replace the shear pin & test to see if the broken shear pin was an effect of a worn clutch dog. I think it is, but best to check first.<br />Shear pins generally don't wear out on thier own, unless the prop & propshaft are really messed up.

And your description also fits a long-term loose prop, or a prop that has hit a few under-water objects, which will do exactly what a shear pin's supposed to do - shear it.<br /><br />Why not renew the shear pin and run the boat to see what you're left with. If it doesn't keep jumping, you're home and dry. If it does, you've narrowed the field to the clutch dog.
