clutch dog 1998 Johnson 40??

So I went out fishing today, my motor had alot of problems getting into gear, in the end it would just rev really high, after being towed in, I took it to a mechanic who said the clutch dog gave out and would be 1000 atleast to replace, is this normal, can I do it myself and save the costs?

Yes do it yourself, or at least try.
First remove the prop and check the bushing in it hasnt given way

Are you sure you don't have a spun prop hub? Prop shaft will spin w/prop hub but prop blades won't.

I'd confirm before anything else.

Get an OEM Factory Service Manual and dig into it. I can't see where this mechanic wants $1000 to repair it. Stay away from him !!

First of all how can he actually know the clutch dog is gone without disassembling the foot first? I mean if you can't get it into any gear, maybe the pivot lever or cradle came loose or the shift rod has come loose. Too many other issues to check before handing out $1000 dollars to some one without knowing the true problem. Yes, I too suggest to buy the manufactures specific year and model and HP shop manual for your engine and read. Could save you a $1000 dollars... I don't know of any $1000 part and/or labor involved in anything with the foot myself...

I checked the bushing and hub and everything seemed fine, its like the reverse or forward gear wont engage, I had my brother spin the prop and when I would put it in gear nothing would happen, on the water before I got towed in I tried to spin the prop with my hand while it was in neutral and it was like stuck and wouldnt move at all. Im guessing the water freed the prop during the tow. Im hoping something just got lose. Currently searching for a manual.

I'd drain the lower unit oil and see what comes out. "pan" it for metal pieces. Changing oil is a $15 investment. I opened up my LU and found my clutch dog blew up but also had other problems with the cradle, pinion and shift yoke. Very easy to get in to. You can find used dogs for $50 and used LU's for $300. I agree with finding a new mechanic.
