Hope im not repeating this but refresh my memory please. I just picked up a heat exchanger. I'm going to convert to closed cooling and i'd like to cool the manifold as well. Will the OD water pump handle cooling the whole system or just the engine? MC-1 1970 L6 250cid Thankyou Does anyone have this system or have done it.

Re: Closed cooling Question

Ayuh,.....

The Mod.1,+ the Alpha 1 are nortoriously Under equiped in the Waterpump dept......
If you're going to a Full System,....
I'd take the time to retrofit a Belt Driven raw waterpump.......

Re: Closed cooling Question

This diagram doesn't include a raw water pump. Is why i was wondering if it's possible to do a full closed system. Thanks

Re: Closed cooling Question

My model 888, (302 Ford) has full closed cooling & runs soley on the impeller in the drive......;)
That said, the water here remains a pretty constant 55* or so.....
Also, if youe engine is over a year old or has over 100 hours, it is not really a candidate for the retrofit........;)
If you must do it, at least give it a try without the extra pump.....:)

Re: Closed cooling Question

I have to disagree with Bondo on the size of the pump. While it might be a problem on a V8, I don't see a problem with a small 4 cylinder. But I do think you might have a problem with the manifold running hotter with it being part of the closed side of the system, and the intake and carb are part of that. Could very easly cause some vapor locking problems with the extra heat after shutdown.

Re: Closed cooling Question

Ayuh,......

The Raw Waterpump is mounted in the line coming from the Outdrive,.....
That isn't shown, At All in your picture.....

If he was going to do everything But the exhaust manifold,...
I Agree the mod.1s pump would, no doubt do the Job....
But,...
Adding the Exhaust into it, in My mind,...
I'd add the bigger, belt-driven pump.....

For that matter,....
PM FreebeTony,.... He did this same thing back before he bought the V8 he's got now.....

Re: Closed cooling Question

sorry Don i see you were refering to it would be ok for a 4 but iffy on a l6. Has anyone done it? Wonder if it would depend on the exchanger size?

I'd have to say that a larger exchanger would not hurt......:)

Re: Closed cooling Question

I had a 21' Glasply that had a Ford 351 with fresh water cooled manifolds and only using the pump in the outdrive, and it did fine. BUT, I was also in 45? to 50? water.

Missed the part about being a 6 not a 4 ..... Duh

Re: Closed cooling Question

Thought I sent sns a pic or two.

Afetr I finally got the set-up runng ok........it did run on the warm side........probablyh close to 180* or so.

I remember some discussions between Don/Bondo and myself regarding if the manifold should have been in the FWC loop.

Ayuh,....

That's what I was remembering,+ Why I suggest an engine mounted raw waterpump.....

Re: Closed cooling Question

Running 175? to 180? is normal for Mercs with manifolds cooled with AF, and isn't a problem with any engine.

Re: Closed cooling Question

Yeah i got those pics Tony, thanks again. I guess i'm gonna try it. It's an oversize exchanger for this engine so i'm hoping i can cool the manifold also. If it tends to run warm i'll refit a half system i guess or add a raw water pump. I dont intend on sking/tubing or hammering on her anyway, just fish going nowhere in a hurry. Thanks guys i'll let ya know if it works.
