Have a new boat. Thinking about putting on a closed cooling system. I don't know how expensive the manifolds and risers will be seeing as they have cats in them. Figure if I convert to closed cooling things will last allot longer and I will have less stress during the winter wondering if the block and manifolds are OK.

So two questions.

1. Thoughts on going closed colling?
2. Where can I get a kit for this?

Thanks for the feedback folks.

Michiganmotorz.com has both SJE and SeaKamp brands and can advise you on the proper kit to buy.

tpenfield has exceeded their stored private messages quota and cannot accept further messages until they clear some space.

Any ways this is what I was trying to send you:
Now that I think of it I agree size does matter, not cost. I'll try to figure out a poll with what type (fishing, water sport, cruiser) and size. Don't know what to do with the info once we have it but would be nice to have a general idea of what our peers have. Perhaps it can help the moderators organize the site.

Just keep one thing in mind, you have a very new system with catalytic converters, and I doubt if there is more than one or two people on this board even realizes exist, let alone how to redo the cooling system to something else. Ted's (tpenfield) is about his 1996 engines, and cats didn't even exist back then, nor on anything since a year or so ago, and then only in Calif and now starting to show up in other states.

Get with a Mercruiser dealer and find out what is available for your engine, there is nothing out there aftermarket for it just yet, nor is there any information on it.

Do you boat in salt water?

Yeah those cats scare me. I can't even look them up to see how much they are when they will need replacing.

They are about $800 per side as I recall, and I don't think they are part of the closed cooling system either.

Re: Closed cooling for Mercruiser 5.0 2013 with cats

I did find out I was wrong about your cats being 800 each, they are 1200 each.
I had access to the dealer site up till a few months ago, and there is just no manuals or any other info on to V8 cats. They may have manuals now, but they didn't then, you can order one here https://mercnet.mercurymarine.com/l...3c9c9f25863e36527c120c5b8.e38KchyKbh4Qbi0Ray0

Have no clue what you will get for your money.

You can also look up part numbers here. https://webapps.brunswick.com/literature/literatureSearch.do

DO NOT loose your serial number. You need it for everything for your engine and drive.
It would be a good idea if you put it in your signature, 2013 Bayliner 255CR doesn't mean much when you have engine and drive questions.
Also, your picture in your signature doesn't show up for me, just a blank square.

RE: #4 replacing the ECM.

Those are huge money. Close to $2k each If I remember. When I was looking into buying Fresh Water Cooling kits from Mercury they offered to "reflash" the ECM for me at no charge. You might want to check with them and see if they will do the same for you.

I remember that conversation and i almost mentioned it here, Glad you did.

By the way, did Mercruiser happen to mention to you if the engine hours need to be at 0 or can you run the engine for a few hours? (For swapping them out not a reflash)

They didn't mention hours specifically just that because they were new motors they would re-flash them for me. The way Mercury tech support explained it to me a re-flash was just completely wiping the ECM of all data and re-programming it with the new program for closed cooling. So whether they re-flashed them for me or just sent me new ones it would be the same. I guess most or all dealers can't re-flash so either way the non fresh water cooled ECM has to go back to Mercury corporate. I think they were so thrilled that I was going to be spending $3k a motor for a system that most others charge $1.2k for they didn't care about hours.

I figured that the Cat converters would be an issue . . . The Mercruiser add-on solution looks pricey ($3K+)

It may be worth touching base with the aftermarket guys (SJE & SeaKamp) to see where they are at with kits for the new engines. :noidea:

Just a few hours on the engines at this point, (right?) . . . salt water :noidea: North Carolina ????

I don't assume things like that, when I do and end up wrong, and someone could spend a lot of money just to find out it won't work.

Hey I just thought of this. I just sent an email off to the dealer that I bought the boat from asking if they had one of these kits.

Not quite sure why it has to be this way but if you order your new motor from Merc with the fresh water cooling option already on it my dealer told me it runs a little over $500. If you order it after the fact (exact same thing) it's big bucks depending on the motor application. It's too bad, I think a lot more people would go OEM if it wasn't so price prohibitive.

Just got a call from the dealer. $2,600 for the kit. The risers/manifolds(one peace) are $540 each.
