Hello
I have a 2004 mercruiser 4.3L with a alpha 1 gen 2 outdrive. After months of waiting to get it back from the marina I finally got to use my boat this summer. I am noticing a clicking noise when the outdrive is down and motor is reved up. Does not happen at idle or low rpm’s. At least not that I can hear. I’m thinking one of the exhaust flappers may have fallen into the pipe? I know the marina had to replace one. I’m just wondering how do you get it out? Or make sure one isn’t in there? The bellows kit was was just done by a different marina
Thank you
Todd

Normally if all is well../the normal noise would appear at about 1000-1300 rpm in my experience. Then go away after or before that. If it’s the flapper.

Thanks Qboy. My experience with that marina was terrible. They first said the flappers were fine, then said one was missing and thought it may have fallen in so I thought that might be causing the clicking I’m hearing.

Yeah. If you are in anyway mechanically minded or have a keen ear for an engine noise, it can definitely cause concern, to one who might be not aware of how they behave.
One of my boat has a few of them, having a switched exhaust system. That’s even worse for it ! But yeah…at around those rpms they can chatter or tick. Almost very like an old school tappet noise even.
All I’d say about your concern around the old flapper being stuck…might be that you should ask them if they removed or found the old flappers before replacing them. They normally fail when there has been an overheating issue and can get stuck down the pipe. More often than not, causing a restriction in the cooling flow and another overheating issue thereafter.

I first noticed it out on the water. Now I have it on the muffs. This all started because I was running hot. After 1700 bucks at the marina for the heat issue it turned out my temp sensor wasn’t matched to my Faria beede guage. So it reads almost 30 degrees hotter than what the motor actually is. I just concerned because I heard that a flapper that falls in can cause heat issues so I want to make sure this isn’t contributing

Usually if you can hear it making the ticking noise…it means it’s in place. Usually…
