I have a '66 outboard and know little about boats. It's a 45 HP and ran great. But, all of a sudden it wouldn't start. When I turn the key, it clicks (solenid?) but nothing else happens. The starter doesn't turn. Is it the solenid or starter?
Probably neither, aab.<br /><br />Most likely is a bad cable or connection in the starter high current circuit.<br /><br />Check out the FAQ on non-starting.<br /><br />Good luck, and welcome to iboats.
Sounds like the solinoid works if you are hearing a click. My guess is a bad battery. You can try using a jumper cable from the wire in front of the starter to the red lead on the battery to test starter but if battery is bad that wont prove anything. Take battery in and have it load tested. You probably need about 400 Cold Cranking Amps to start that motor.
I'd check all the battery to solenid connections, wire brush the connections, reassemble, it could be the solenid too, they are pretty cheap cost wise, is this a salr water boat?
