Cleats vs. bow/stern eye

Hi all,
Where do you tie off your anchor; cleats, bow eye, or stern eye. I asked because I often have difficulty releasing my anchor and have to use the engine to help get it lose. I would imagine that the cleats are not as strong as the bow and stern eye. Is this correct?

Thanks.

Cleats, bow and stern eyes "should be" {not are} backed with a plate on the inside of your hull.

For your own knowledge try to take a look at all from inside the hull and see.

If they are not backed, you can back them your self with some aluminum or stainless.

Adds a great deal of strength.

I always use cleats for anchor or docking, bow eye for trailer wench strap hook, and stern eyes for safty straps to trailer.

Cleats for anchoring at rest should be no problem, but as Reel Poor says, check that they're installed properly.

For releasing a stubborn anchor, it makes sense to tie to the bow eye, which will stay on the boat long after a cleat has torn out. Safe is better than sorry!

It the anchor is fouled that bad I don't think the bow eye will break it loose. I don't believe a small boat can produce enough pull to rip out a properly installed and sized cleat.
