Todays grease, maybe, what he is describing sounds like the old fashioned wheel bearing grease, it was tan, looked almost like it had fibers in it, stringy, gummie, had to have solvent of some kind to get it off of your hands. If you do not know what we are referring to, you just ain't old enough. :D

personally I would use varsol and a brush then blow them out with compressed air and rag. Use to clean all kinds of bearings and rollers at work that way .Gets all the grit out too

I bought an old trailer recently and took the bearings, races and seal out and soaked everything in a small pail of gasoline. Had to scrub quite a bit with a brush as the seals had at some time failed and there was alot of crud built up on the hubs. They eventually cleaned up like new.

Re: Cleaning the old grease out of the hubs

ok, I just did this last weekend, with my ford explorer hubs, which I replaced and foolishly packed with boat trailer grease not rated for hi-temp disc brake hubs, so I had to repack 'em.

What I did was, used an aerosol brake cleaner, it did the trick I mean fast. Course, it was brand new hubs, new bearings, new grease. Watch out for ricochet, it does sting a bit when it hits your eye.........

i found that the chem-dip you can get at parts stores in a gallon can works very well!
remove the easy globs of grease then drop in the can,let soak as you disasemble the other side then rinse off with garden hose....
all mine come out perfectly clean. takes the paint off too!
