Cleaning of Hull

I've aquired a boat and the hull is stained brown from years of sitting in the water and neglect. Some of it comes off with a scrub brush but the stain remains. What do I need to do to get the hull white again? I've been told to buff it with a compound, will this work and if so what materials would be best?

Thanks

You can try one of the many boat bottom cleaners that have acid in them such as ON/OFF, Instant hull cleaner. If the boat is on a trailer just make sure you cover the trailer because this stuff will discolor the metal.

I got some stuff from West Marine called FSR (fiberglass Stain Remover?). It is a gel about the consistency of salad dressing that you wipe on (no rubbing needed) and it takes the stain out, or at least it did for me. Worth a shot.

I went shopping for something to clean the hull this last weekend. I couldnt believe the price they wanted for a small bottle of something that may or maynot work. Theres gotta be a home reciepe for a good hull cleaner out there.

How about Soft Scrub? My dad uses it on lots of things on his boat. I think grocery stores sell it in the cleaning aisle. Works well on white plastic lawn chairs too.
