Do you actually mean this as broadly and literally as has been implied?

Posts on controversial topics such as politics, social controversy and religion have proven to be inflammatory and will no longer be allowed.

For example we cannot discuss the 2008 election? Hybrids vs. Diesels? Alternative Fuels? Battery improvements? The health benefits of oat fiber? Methane emissions from cattle? Geothermal plants. Solar power? Wind power? Eminent domain? John Edward's hair? Hillary's calves? Dubyah's IQ? Bill's inhaling ability? Techno? Crop circles? UFOs? Sun spots? Bayliner's? Vita-meta-vegamin?

Personally, I think you have just made this site less likely to grow. I completely understand the intent, but the road to heck is paved . . . If Dockside is supposed to be limited to discussing recipes and the weather (oh, wait, that would be social controversy) then I believe you have just made this place less fun, educational, compelling, exciting, desirable, intriguing and did I say fun?

I know I have posted it before, but I will never understand why anybody gets worked up. I have this little thing semi-permanently attached to my right index finger. It is called a mouse and I have found I can close as well as open threads with it . . .

BTW, I do not see this thread as a challenge that needs to be taken off line. I am asking for a clarification for all. If I am off base and simply dense, then post it publicly. I can close this thread too if it is too painful :)

Re: Clarification Please - Mods

you better take what you can get. Dockside was almost totally gone. discuss boat stuff in the boating and engine forums. yes, if you want a literal interpretation. enough said.

Re: Clarification Please - Mods

If it starts a fight or is likely to start a fight don't post it. If it bashes a public figure, don't post it.

If we judge it not suitable it will go, whether we have specifically listed it as undesirable or not. If I don't want my 12 year old granddaughter to see it, it will go. Etc., etc.

Yes, we expect this particular forum to shrink a bit and become more friendly and family oriented.

Consistency gentlemen.

You've not only allowed that policy to be violated but many of you have violated it yourselves for a period of years and in doing so have effectively nullified that policy in the eyes of the forum participants. Now you're irritated at the forum participants who wonder what the rules are. I'm sure I'm not alone in having never read the forum rules. Quite frankly I'm surprised at what is (allegedly) not allowed and I'm sure I'm not alone in this either.

If "there's a new Sheriff in town" then at least be consistent so site users know what to expect. With that said, I can confirm your feeling that the Dockside forum will shrink. So will my visits to the site - and so will my patronage of the site advertisers and sponsors, which is the primary reason the site exists to begin with.

I appreciate the site and the hard work of the Moderators. At the risk of sounding critical I will suggest that instead of an out and out ban the Moderators should engage in the act of moderating.

Offered respectfully and sincerely.

I agree with QC. I hope that this is not followed through with and is merely a cry of frustration. Whenever I have seen this type of policy implimented on other boards, it always leads to a rapid decline as people leave for other sites without the rules to restrict the fun.

People come here because they are interested in boats, but also to laugh, chat and yes argue with people who have similar interests.

If you want this to be a 'child safe' site, so be it, start posting about the latest teeny bopper pop star & American Idol. Those of us interested in a more 'adult' venue will seek greener pastures.

I'll hang around a while and see if this happens, I hope not, this has been a very enjoyable site and I would hate to see it ruined.

we nearly lost dockside completely. if a some friends leave they wil be missed, but that will be the cost we paid, inorder to keep dockside. it was not a fluke decision. it had to be cleaned up.

It already happened here a couple of years ago. I still keep in contact with about 10 of those that left! I don't come here much either anymore.....

Quit already - "We" didn't nearly "lose" anything. Those who make the decisions (as is their right) nearly DECIDED to ELIMINATE the Dockside forum.

I agree that many of the forums were allowed to get a bit more ugly than proper public decorum should dictate. That's why moderation is necessary - as in every venue available to the general public.

Again - Offered respectfully and sincerely.

Well why don't we all see what the next round of creative topics yields first before we start a collective moan.
A lot of the political posts were getting pretty tedious and predictable. Same rants, same responses.
It's a big world....lets try it on and bring it on.

Very well said, as I have come to expect from you: Terry Olson. Relatively polite debate about current events is both very healthy an intellectually stimulating in a democracy, (especially in a time of war with a pivotal election on the horizon). Cencored discussions about butterflies, kittens n' fuzzy wuzzy stuff is not, (at least to me) intellectually stimulating in any way shape or form.

Someone has said this particualar part of the forum was dead or dying. Sure did not look that way to me but I guess the brain cell isn't working very well, and I'm a fairly short timer here.

I liked this place as it was, and the mechanical advice elsewhere on this forum is very good. If the allowed topics on DC are basically only what is allowed elsewhere on this large site I doubt I will have much interest to post further here in DC.

I shall lurk a bit in the near term, but it looks like the attraction of this great place is now gone, at least for me.

Respectfully JR

Yeah - have you seen the one about the weather yet??? It's getting cooler here.... Yep.... Frost is in the air.... Yep.... Won't be long now and I'll be putting the old boat away for the season.... Yep.... There was frost on the old pumpkin last night.... Yep....

The time to moan has officially arrived.

People haven't been interested in this since the '40s.

I'll lurk for a bit too, but I'm not what you would call optomistic.

Mr. Olson, with all due respect, you have no idea how things are done on these forums.
Yes, there is the man that can pull the plug at anytime he wishes, but 99% of the stuff that is done here is done by us, The Mod Team.
7 of us that butt our heads together to come up with a plan and present it to the main man to approve.
After that we implement it(Changes).

This was not something that just got throwed out there and was done.
We worked on this for more than a week trying to figure out what we were going to do.
The DC area was getting way out of hand.
Again, with all due respect.

Re: Clarification Please - Mods

Also with respect, I for one have not sensed this has been as out of control as the last time things were buckled down. There has been some fighting, but I also see agreement to disagree and those who have had constant battles, keeping those battles clean. Like I have said, I will support it, and even try and help, but the words I have bolded above are too broad even to understand. Please what is "Social controversy"? Is creation religion? Not in the defintions that I understand. Religion is about the practice not whether or not there is a Supreme Being. Different stuff. Anyway, if you want understanding, help us understand.
