Ethnic rebellion? I don’t know but it seems to me there has been a ham-fisted dictator there for quite some time keeping the people under control. <br /><br /> There is quite a bit of animosity between the Sunni, the Shiite. Maybe the only group that will come out ahead is the Kurds. Seems to me that they are keeping a rather low profile.<br /><br /> I sure don’t know what the difference is between the two branches of the muslin religion is .I guess maybe that would be grist for another thread. My main concern is that whole area will be stepping into the fray.<br /><br /> I wonder what the price of oil would be if the whole area erupted into a Shiite Sunni war?

Yes it is a civil war.That is what a war between 2 religious groups in one country is called.<br />It seems that we really cannot get out now,because we empowered the shiite south and they would win with Iranian help.The next thing on the map would be a pro Iranian block made up of Syria,Iraq and of course Iran.The Kurds will surrender to that sort of power all around them and the middle east will be a lot more dangerous than before the removal of Saddam.<br />Come to think of it,we might find ourselves teaming up with the Sunni pro Saddam forces in order to re-establish the balance of power that existed before we moved in.<br />I hate to have 20/20 hindsight but do think twice in the next election when your vote counts.

Darth, I spend part of my army service in Kurdistan training Kurdish militias about 25 years ago (Barazani/Peshmerga).And I did not meet or see one single shia kurd. The kurds solidly adhere to the sunni islam.<br />There is a tiny group of Shia Kurds that lives in Baghdad and some more in the Iran ,Iraq border area.<br />They are called the Faili and are too few to have any weight as a group.<br />NB These Failis have an interesting history.Both Nur E-Din and Salah E-Din (Saladin)came from this group.These 2 moslem generals defeated and ultimately chased the crusaders out of the holy land.(1189 AD battle of Hittim).
