I was looking on the Seloc site tonight. Can someone tell me if Chrysler outboards become Force outboards at some stage, or was Force derived from Mercury ? Force is not something common in New Zealand (apart from ones that come with imported used boats from CA) they ceratinly do have that Chrysler look to them though.

Cheers
Mike

Re: Chrysler/Force

I couldn't find the post, so I'll give you the story...

Chrysler bought out West Bend's outboard motor operations in the early 1960's. (West Bend made fine blenders and whatnot...)

Chrysler sold their outboard motor operations to US Marine in the early 1980's. US Marine also owned Bayliner, etc. The changed the name of the outboard to "Force." I have a 1985 Force that is identical to a Chrysler, except for the cheap stickers on the cowling.

Anyhow, at some point, Brunswick Marine acquired US Marine. Brunswick owns Mercury, among other things. So the engines became "Force by Mercury." Over the years, they did things like put Merc lower units on Force power heads, added electronic ignition, and replaced the clumsy, oversized cowls with sleeker units.

Basically these motors are still Chryslers, which are basically West Bends. Nothing spectacular performance-wise, but they are simple and relatively easy to fix.
As Paul Harvey says, "Here's the REST of the story". Merc was faced with a decision, due to the Fed's new (Thanks, Clinton) stricter standards, under the "clean Air Act". The standards, slated for 2000, lower emissions..In particular, something called METB's...(Or whas it MBTE's ?? Hell, I dunno)
...Don't axe me, I dunno. But it's bad for water and what lives in therein.

So anyhoo,Merc was faced with 70's era Technology, and Y2K standards.. Merc ran this by thier engineers, who said "EEEEW, GROSS!!! What's your overtime policy??"...Then, the powers what were commenced to whackin on thier addin machines, and they said, "YOUR FIRED!!" In short, they dropped the entire line, and cosolidated thier parts/suport concerns, who said, "EEEW, GROSS!! Our virginity is defiled!"... But, they reluctantly did so, under the "QUIKSILVER" brand name. But they called a citified lawyer, who told them , "You ain't gotta carry them past 10 years".
So, you get to today.... What a bargain for the savy boater!!! They were cheaper than a Merc to begin with when they were made
smile.gif
Now, nobody wants em... I say, "FANASTIC!!!"
I get to buy used ones for a SONG! And they don't have VRO, Power oil induction, free rebreathing canisters, or nothin else that isn't 2CYLCE,MTBE-EMITTING,OIL-SLICKIN,RUNNIN,SCREAMERS! Don't get me wrong, I'm all for getting that bad stuff outta my favorite opponent's domain. It's a good thing they did. I'll just have to look up the nose of the "Allison Tournament Elite", OMC, Yammy and Merc guys at the ramp.
But let them eat cake, I'm spendin lots less than they are to get closer to ***!
And, at some point in the very distant future, my som will find a bargain in the old re***bant nuelcial force-feb,nano reducer outboard...."ooo bad they dont make no parts fer the puppy".

Re: Chrysler/Force

Waahoo ! You guys always amaze me with the information that you provide. Thanks Page62 & 12footer. I am so envious of the, what seems, endless supply of used parts you guys can obtain in the USA. Not quite like that in NZ. I have a 1992 Suzuki which I care for as much as I can. They are no-longer imported into NZ or Australia so I imagine parts are going to become very expensive here as time goes on !

Mike
