Chrysler 55hp not idling in gear

My 83 Chrysler 55hp will start and idle....until I put it in gear..... dies every time.<br /><br />Any suggestions?<br /><br />I was reading some previous posts and someone mentioned NAPA as a source of parts..... is this the same local NAPA auto parts store, or something else?<br /><br />thanks for the help...

Hello Don and welcome to iboats. NAPA auto parts carries a large selection of marine parts. The carb kit you need is 18-7037 and cost about 20 bucks. You will also need a fuel pump rebuild kit from NAPA which is 18-7806 which costs about 10 bucks. The carb kit should come with instructions. The fuel pump kit you probably only need the diaphram. I recommend you buy a Syloc service manual to help you with maintaining your motor.<br /><br />Do this first. When motor is trying to kill when you put it in forward gear push in the choke for about a second. If motor performance improves and dont kill chances are your problem is fuel related. At this point I would rebuild the carb and the fuel pump, Also replace all the fuel lines on the motor. If motor kills when you try the choke you could have a bad cylinder or and electrical problem.
