Chrysler 55 will not engage forward or reverse

Chrysler 55HP with single lever remote control(push/pull button on side). Model 555HG Serial 3681. Recently purchased with swiftcraft hull. Engine idles & revs fine in Neutral, however will not select gear. P.S. Just replaced water pump impeller. <br /><br />On the trailer with the motor vertical, and the controls in the Forward position, the prop can be spun by hand. With the motor lifted at angle, in the towing position, the prop will engage.<br /><br />Control cable does actuate the the shift rods, however only with minimal movement.<br /><br />How is reverse selected wth this remote control.<br /><br />My Clymer Shop Manual does not shop this model accurately.

Hello chryslernovice and welcome to iboats. Between the lower unit and the powerhead are motor covers held in by 6 bolt and nuts. Remove these and you will see a long nut about 1 1 /4 inches. This nut has reverse threads on one side and there should be a small lock nut next to it. Have someone shift for you while you watch this nut. Does it go up and down on both the top linkage and the bottom linkage of this nut? This linkage is the adjustment for the shift linkage in the lower unit. If neither linkage is moving then your problem is up in the powerhead area where thc cables attach.

Hi eurolarva, thankyou, once I got around the corroded motor cover screws, the linkage was obvious. A bit far bit of lubrication and adjustment and Yippie, we have Forward & Reverse. Thanks Again.
