Chrysler 55 water pickup cover

Whatever goes here is long gone..
Is it a plate with holes? Anyone have a photo?

I think I could fabricate something, or is it common to run with the cover off?

Yes it is a plate with holes.
You can run without it BUT if you run in shallow water you might have mudd, sand and aquatic plants get in to the water impeller.

Run it.
The screen if ran in shallow water would do what Nordin said.
It would get weeds and mud in there.
Just run it.
