Today I tried to pull the flywheel and the nut is on there tight. I can’t seem to get it loose as it just turns the flywheel when I try to loosen it. Any suggestions? Do I need to jam the gear somehow?

A Strap Wrench can be used to hold the Flywheel. Some People will jam something in the Teeth on the Flywheel, but I have seen Teeth damaged by that Method.
That Nut isn't on there all that Tight, the Spec is 80 Pound Feet, which is less than most Wheel Nuts

I use a larger screw driver or a small crowbar and wedge it between the flywheel teeth and the starter gear teeth.
It has always worked out to loosen the flywheel nut.

Jimmbo, I agree completely, I use a torque wrench to tighten lug nuts.
Just about everytime I do a brake job I have to use a hot wrench to loosen the lugs that were installed by an impact wrench. No way would the people get them off with just a 4 way.

One time I was trying to put my Winter Tires on, and one of the Wheel Nuts just wouldn't loosen. I then went back to my Cousins shop which had that Wheel off a month earlier, they Eventually got it off, but it took over 240 Foot Pounds to break it loose. I certainly had Words with my cousin about his Guys who likely used an Impact, even though I specifically told my Cousin "No Impacts"

On the shoulder of the highway with a flat tire is not a good time to find out that your lug nuts were over torqued with an impact......whenever I get new tires the first thing I do is break em all loose, then retorque to proper spec.
If you had a 4-way you might have a chance.....but if all you had was the single handle LR that comes with most cars, you might be SOL...

Thanks everyone,

After being defeated with this fly wheel I said "Fxxx it, I'm taking it out fishing with one cylinder, it will get me around anyways." Well once I got it fired up it suddenly started to run both cylinders and this happened. I'd still like to get the flywheel off and clean up some of the gunk on the engine but this made my day. Next is to do a seafoam shock to it. Then I need to work on the linkage, as it doesn't go into reverse.

Can anyone help me identify if I can get seals for the lower?

Lots to learn and do on it but man was this a big win for me. I'll keep posting to this thread as I progress. Thanks for all the help and suggestions so far.

Franz Marine will have seals for the LU.

All seals and o-ring are available except the seal for the shift shaft at companies that sells bearings, seals, power train stuff and other machine related details here in Sweden.
I suppose they are in the US too.

Do you know if they’ll ship to the socialistic republic of Canada?

Unrelated, I noticed this gap at the prop today. Is this a concern?

I think Franz Marine will ship to Canada, I live in Sweden Europe and he ship to me.
Looking at your prop gap to gear case and it looks like it is not quite right BUT it do not have any effect at the OB performance as these Chryslers do not have any exhaust through the prop.
It is just cosmetic.

The following is my opinion: Seafoam is a waste of $$$
Get a can of spray cleaner and use it to clean the carb.
I bought a can of SF tried to use it to clean the carbon from the piston I had setting around. DID NOTHING!!

Hi all,

Well it's been a while so I thought I'd give an update. I was able to get both cylinders running and got her out fishing. On the way back to the dock something happened and it seemed to slip out of gear at high speeds. I was able to limp her back and got her out of the water.

As I stated in a previous post, the linkage was an issue I was going to address. It was always in forward for whatever reason so I thought it was about time I learn how to rebuild a lower. I got her all apart and the clutch dog wasn't worn which is what I suspected. (keep in mind this is my first ever outboard and I'm learning everything I know along the way). I did run some seafoam through it. Given some of the testing on seafoam by youtuber "project farm" it seemed like a good idea.

The gear oil was milky so I had to find seals to seal it back up. Took a bit of work but I sealed up the gear box and replaced the impeller since it had a broken fin. I was able to reconnect the linkage and it looks like whoever worked on it last didn't set it correctly. Replaced the prop that seems to look like the prop's hub was not in straight so maybe it was spun? I don't know. I'm able to now get it in neutral, forward and reverse. Ran it in the bucket and it was spitting warm water with the new impeller so I think I'm set. Going to get her back on the water tomorrow.

Something I found interesting is that there was a paper seal I didn't replace but it appears to be Part # 27- F286555 , 27-F 286555 , 18-0623, RLO263 which shows as a gasket for 7-15hp lower. I don't know what to make of it but was wondering if it is inadequate to use on a 55. I could use your thoughts on this. I can't get this gasket in Canada, but it looks like it's super cheap in the US. Sadly, the shipping quotes for this 5$ gasket is around 50-60$ which I won't pay. I'd sooner cut it out of gasket paper. Maybe someone would be willing to get it for me and mail it to me? I don't know if that's appropriate to ask.

I have second lower with some repairs on it but it uses a large o ring for the seal instead of the gasket. Maybe I should consider using this?

Anyways, let me know your thoughts on my rambling. I'll let you know how it runs on the water this weekend.

Thanks again to everyone for their help. Still haven't gotten the flywheel off and haven't adjusted or addressed points but both cylinders are firing now so I think it was related to sitting around for a while.

You can make that gasket 47-F286555 for the lower split of the gear case by your self.
Get some gasket paper and cut it out .
When assembling it coat the gasket with a thin amount of some liquid gasket such as "Permatex Avaition form a gasket" or equal.
Do not use a thick gasket paper, 0,015-0,020 in (0,4-0,5mm) will be okey.
