Looking at 74 luhrs 318 with bad motor in it. Seller has replacement. New to such serious overhaul, what are things I should consider? What would be ballpark figure to have mechanic install? Should I consider bigger motor? What would be concerns with doing so? Are velvet transmissions quality? If I go thru work I want to do it right so it lasts. I have a lot of mechanical ability is this something I should attempt on my own?

The hardest part is physically getting the engine in and out of the boat, if you can get that handled then you can do it yourself.

I really would look for a different boat. It's very old. Very heavy. The 318 had not been used in 30 years and I will not upset any Luhrs owners.

velvet drives are normally bullet proof provided you don't let the fluid run low. they were probably the most commonly used tranny in the tournament skiing inboard market until v drives started becoming more popular in the late 90s. most direct drives still come with them.
