I won't say he is a bonehead though he made some bad choices.
I've been out hunting when it turned to whiteout conditions were I couldn't see more than twenty or so feet. You get turned around real fast in this and your tracks are gone in an instant.
Glad they made it out ok.
I f the forest sevice fines him I bet he will be very happy to pay it!

Combination of bad choices, then really good decisions when he realized the situation he'd gotten into. How much faith can you put in a weather forecast, but once it hit the fan, found shelter, didn't go wandering around because "the truck's just around the corner", kept the kids from panicking. These things happen fast, even with a compass and GPS on hand. Gotta give the guy a "C" on planning, "B" on reaction. Glad all ended well. Easy to judge when you're not the one involved.

Just saw it on the news. Gotta be happy for the mom.
But for all of use who have went xmas tree hunting in the woods know that it does not matter what tree you find the one just over there is always better. Its amazing how far in the bush you can end up when you are looking for the perfect tree. Then put in lots of snow and every thing looks the same and blends in. Now saying that ive never been lost in the winter. I have always been aware of my surroundings. I guess it come with growing up in small communities that are surrounded buy wooded areas.
