Thank goodness for the kids no matter how big a bonehead the parent is.

Yup. My first thought was "how do you get lost", and I have been in a complete white out and felt vertigo because of it more than once. It's nasty, but . . . He found shelter, they're allright, I want to give the guy a break, but I'm strugglin'.

I have to agree with you QC. I had to follow my own footsteps out once while deer hunting in some jack pines in Montana. It wasen't supposed to snow and I'm sure glad it diden't snow any harder.

a CHRISTMAS MIRACLE!!

hello,

all GOOD things are Blessings from above. ;) ><>

Be THANKFUL.

miracles do happen. they happen when in the course of events, the outcome is a good beyond the expectations of rational man, given an expected sequence of events... leading to an anticipated conclusion. :)

given the enormity of space, as an example, and in its HUGENESS and scale, and in the event life here was little more than a chance happening of random selection... [what are the odds??]

in any event, and by ALL stretches of one's imagination... mankind is the most wonderful miracle of all. :) :)

so, of course, your's is a christmas mircale. it is just what we want for this time of year...

a CHRISTMAS MIRACLE!! :)

regards

lakester

ps: the iboats tech forums may be the 2nd BEST miracle! lol~

I try not to be too hard on him, I've been a Search and Rescue member for a lot of years and see too often what can happen to unprepared people. Hopefully a few people see the post and think a little more before they go out.

Yeah, I've done some pretty Bonehead things my ownself that shoulda got me killed. I even tried to kill my oldest when he was 3 by what some would say was a Bonehead move with my first boat . . . I have seen glimpses of him on the tube, and he seems to be a reasonable guy, but again only glimpses.

OK, here's a pretty detailed story: LA Times Article

Definitely inexperienced and even called himself a "knucklehead". The stupidest thing he did was to go out 5 days from the Winter Solstice to hike around, cut down a tree and hike out, all starting at 3:00PM . . . That was dumb.

Re: Christmas Miracle or Bonehead?

Why are people so quick to bash the guy? I don't understand this. Of course, i also don't understand the media sensationalism over every lost hiker either. But come on, what happened to him could have happened to a lot of people, especially flatlanders who aren't familiar with mountain weather in the winter. It seems like everytime there is a tragedy or near tragedy like this, all the armchair second-guessers in the country feel the need to chime in and bash the victim for their mistakes.

Yeah, the guy did make some critical mistakes and wrong assumptions, but he also pulled it together enough to find decent shelter and keep his family together and alive. Good for him, and I'm sure he and his family learned a lot. Fewer and fewer people these days are at all tuned into nature and how things work when you are away from the conveniences of civilization.

My vote is neither bonehead or "christmas miracle", just another day on planet earth.

He will really feel like a knucklehead for admitting that he cut a tree down when the forest service comes knocking on his door in a couple of days asking to see his logging permit. You can not cut any tree down in the national forest without one. Also there are signs along the roads that pass through the forest stating that it is illegal to take Christmas trees from the area.

Yeah woodrat, I generally agree although when you have kids involved I am a harsher critic. They didn't plan this day, he did . . .

I try to put myself in his shoe's and feel what he must be feeling. I would hope people would show me grace.

We all know he did some dumb things, but we should all agree that he never ment to put himself or his family at risk.

I vote for some wrong choices turning out OK.
