Any one here familiar with the Christina and Delaware rivers in New Castle county Delaware?
When I was a kid we lived in Newport. I know there is a ramp on the Christina. One of the trips I want to make this year is going back to my old stomping grounds.
Maybe a cruise up or down the Delaware......

Anybody interested in joining up?

Ignore spam post #2.

My buddy lives on the Christina River. I do see power boats when I visit. I drive right over via interstate 95 or 495 every day.

When were you looking to go? I live near the C and D canal and plan on dunking my boat and heading up the Delaware River to the Christina this spring so I can stop by my buddies and feel cool.

I am thinking about a warm weekend towards the end of April or the beginning of May.

I know I'm early, but the shack nasties are setting in.;)

Thoughts on places to go ( or to avoid )? I'm aware of Delaware City and New Castle, but not specific restaurants or destinations except Pea Patch Island which I understand is not open to private boats.

I lived in the area my whole life, but all my boating has been done around Cape May County, NJ.

Before my boats goe to Cape May County (North Wildwood) for summer, I am going to explore the lower Delaware River and C&D Canal areas, so I will be asking the locals tons of questions.

I understand the C&D canal has some great places to stop. Chesapeake Inn is just one of them. Learning more every day, so check back.

The C&D canal has Delaware City, Chesapeake City, and Summit North Marina. I am not aware of anything else. There are restaurants at Chesapeake City. The canal can be very dangerous with the large ship traffic. Also, No skiing or sailing in the canal.

The C&D canal has the same types of ships you find everywhere else! The Delaware River and Bay have 'em!

Yep, BUT the canal is real narrow, so the displacement of a cargo ship affects the water dynamic differently. This is actually one of my concerns with boating the Delaware north of Wilmington. I was caught out by a tug pushing some barges once. I was a couple hundred yards away and still caught a 4 or 5 foot wake. That's a lot of water for a sixteen footer.

Sounds like a good jump! ;)

We ride the Delaware, but up north in NJ right below Trenton. There are a few restaurants to hit up that way, and plenty of fun sights. And it's only an hour or two down to Philly.

Love the Delaware...Parts per million, baby! ;)

Oops...

16' boat in the C&D Canal.... yeah, I'd be more concerned.

I hope for a straight, clear shot so I can do some prop and tuning checks. I live near the canal, and boy does that water sit flat like glass for stretches of time.

The canal is one of our favorite cruises at night. Just a nice cocktail cruise up to the Delaware Bay and back....the Rte 1 bridge is beautiful when it's lit up at night. Stopped in at the marina that is 3/4 of the way up (Summit North?) and they were a nice bunch to us. Chesapeake City is a little too nuts on a Sat. night for us with kids.....rather go up to the Nauti-Goose anyway..

We sometimes put in at Burlington. What restaurants are accessible from the water? So far we have only gone upriver as far as Pennsbury Manor.

There is a public dock on the Christina, in Wilmington, that you can tie up to. There are a few bars and restaurants along the water. Before you hit Wilmington, there is a small bar with a dock at the entrance of the Brandywine river which is just inside of the Christina.

You do have to look out for the bridges in Wilmington, They will raise them with enough advance notice, and during high tide on the weekends, they are manned. There is a river taxi that is just a little too tall to fit during high tide.

There is an old swing bridge past Wilmington that is no longer used, and they left it in the closed position. But there is no reason to go up that far unless you are putting in at the ramp in Newport.

I Hope this helps a little.

See you on the Delaware River on June 12th for the New Castle Separation Day fireworks!!!

Dan, Welcome Aboard.

The swing bridge you mentioned......Is that the railroad bridge, or are you speaking of the bridge by the Dupont plant? I am thinking of using the ramp in Newport....The one back by the lagoon in the industrial area. Is there another in Newport?

Thanks for the input:)

That swing bridge I was warning you about is between the ramp in Newport and Wilmington. At high tide, I have to be very careful if my bimini top is up.

There is another swing bridge that in still in use by the port of Wilmington that sits much higher, but is usually open on weekends.

I never go upstream from the ramp. I have seen others up that way, but never anything other than a jon boat past the bridge at DuPont.

I was just looking at the weather... T-Storms possible for Saturday night. Hopefully that changes.

JZ,

It is a celebration of Delaware declaring it's separation from England.

http://www.newcastlecrier.com/Separation.html

I plan on going to New Castle during the day, and putting my boat in at Delaware City around 6 or 7pm. That should be more than enough time to run up the Delaware to New Castle and find a good place to drop anchor for the fireworks.

This is still up in the air, depending on what the weather does. They are currently calling for scattered thunder storms.
