Hi All, brief introduction, my name is Raffaele, 33Y.Old I live in Florence - Tuscany, Italy and I LOVE anything concerns the SEA..
I am not a skilled skipper and my boating background is quite poor.. I had till now only small inflatables & boats, all very simple and within 4Mt / 40Hp... nevertheless, despite the very small size and limited range of use, me and my Brother are on this stuff since when we were very young (our Father always had such small boats, we always used it since when we were born).

Couple of years ago we bought a small 1993 5.20Mt VTR boat, 40Hp Selva outboard engine, our first, small boat little bit more "serious" than the toys we had before.. and our passion is growing steadly up!!

We both are very good with DIY skills, on other applications than boating or boat restoration, we always had this passion.. I am a mechanican engineer and can manage well mechanics / electric and electronic stuff.. I can also work fiberglass and other composite polyesters (I used to self-build fiberglass and carbon fiber components for my motorbyke). My brother is great in working modeling wood and painting..

On our current small boat we did several modifications, from base restoration to electrical upgrades (replaced all electrical wiring, installed new instrumentation, inverter, etc). Now it's time to upgrade!

We put our eyes on a Chris Craft Super Catalina 28.. a 8.5Mt boat with two AIFO 6 in line diesel engines.. similar to the one in the pic:

http://www.boneyardboats.com/Archiv...t_Faves/0044_1973_CC_CATALINA_28_PG09_001.gif

It was love at first sight and in September we'll get it..

The idea is to manage a full restoration, on one side we'll take out both engines and I will open and completely overhaul it (they're working well but there's a slight lack of compression in one cylinder, I'll take the occasion to replace segments, seals & rotating consumables, clean up injectors, tune the fuel pump, blast & paint it, etc) on the other side my broter will replace all interiors & floor wood.

What do you think about this boat? This is the first quite large boat we will have, and we don't know much about this range..

After fixing the engine (I am confident with it) I will need to rebuild entirely the electrical system.. .and here's the question

In the boat we'll have 12V (from battery) and 220V 50Hz (from inverter).. I got a couple of doubts, sorry for my ignorance :D: when we're docked to the bay, ovviously we can get 220V from the ground.. how does it works normally in standard boats.. 220V coming from network goes into the battery charger and it fills the batteries, go to inverter and powers plugs, lamps, refrigerator, etc OR there is a double wiring in order to bring the 220V directly to the applications when the system is connected to the ground (so not going through the inverter)? I don't know if I explained well..
On the other side, I would like to have an aux generator to charge the batteres when we're stopped but away from the ground... like a small diesel enginer with small 12V alternator, in order to not use the big engine to charge up when needed..

I am sorry for superficiality and ground basing of my concepts (and sorry for my english ;)) but I have no background on how is a standard electrical system of this size of boats..

do you have precious suggestions to give us?
Thanks a lot to all, and we're glad to share this new passion with you experts!!

Re: Chris Craft Super Catalina 28 full restoration

Hi Sturanza. I also have a 28 footer and I'm very happy with the size. It's heavy enough that it rides over average size waves without upsetting everybody onboard. Plus I see you have dual diesels which is awesome!

Regarding the electricals I would first see how it's currently set up. I ripped all my wiring out and went super-simple. When docked my shore power (120V in the U.S.) powers only the refrigerator and electronic battery charger (2-channel to charge both batteries). Then when I'm at sea the alternator keeps the batteries charged just like in a car. When I'm at sea I can only run 12VDC things like the lights and radio.

Well good luck with your project and please keep us updated with photos.

Hi Bert! Understood.. So you mean that when at sea, you can't drive the refrigerator through inverter, correct?
I still don't have that boat with me, we're managing the purchase but we'll own it only in september, as agreed with the vendor.. I am sure that when we'll finally have on-hand all stuff, we will also have a clearer picture about how it actually is and how we are targeting to restore / upgrade it... we have big projects.. on one side, the boat will be restored to conditions similar than brand new (new paint, VTR restore where / if needed, new paint, new interior and woods) on the other side, it will be upgraded (new instrumentation, radar, eco, electrical wiring as above described, etc).. we are really ansious to get it and put our hands on it!!
ciao from Italy!
