Hi everyone,

I’ve been browsing the forum trying to gather some information for a possible boat purchase next year. I live a short distance from the water in upper Narragansett Bay RI. I have two kayaks but have never owned a power boat. I’m trying to decide which makes/models would suit me best. I’m looking for something with a fairly shallow draft that would allow for wading to shore or clamming in shallow water. I would also be fishing around the bay and possibly venturing a short distance off shore (Block Island sound) on perfect weather days. Most days on the bay start off with the water glass smooth and pick up to a 1-2’ chop by afternoon.

My budget is going to be $10,000 and weight limit 6,100 on the tow vehicle. I’m considering 18-21’ range center consoles. I’m concerned flat bottom boats will be too rough in the chop but deep V will keep me out of the shallows where I clam. Any make/model suggestions for my needs?

Thanks.

Conditions sound similar to ours....

Do you know a good, cheap chiropractor? Your going to need one with the pounding of a flat bottom boat in those conditions.

In your situation I’d be looking for a outboard powered mod-v or constant variable deadrise type hull to help smooth out the ride.

Im running a 22’ boat with very aggressive deadrise yet draft only 14”. Just anchor and wade to shore

I think a center console is a good choice for you. A friend has a 18' Parker CC with a 115 hp outboard on it and we went fishing the other day. It started smooth and later the wind came up like crazy but the boat handled it well. He has a soft top that we put up to shade us from the hot sun. He pulls this boat with a small Toyota Tacoma.

There are so many makes and models of the CC it is tough to point you towards one or another.
I would suggest getting a boat that has been well maintained and has a good solid trailer and if possible a newer 4 stroke motor with low hours.
