I have a huge problem, I have an 8 HP Mercury engine and when I bought it for one of my boats it worked great. Now a year later the engine seems to have a "max-out" problem. what I mean is that I have the throttle to the max and it seems like it is not goin anywhere, I mean my trolling motor is faster than this, but I have it at full throttle. My question is, what is causing this and what can I do do fix this, I have tried everything, I rebuilt the carberuator also last year and it just started to do that. what makes this problem wiered is that all the sudden the engine will just kick in to its normal speed and "max out" stage and it works great. Then I stop the engine, fish for a couple of minutes or so, start up the engine and it goes back to the same problem. Do you think it might be the float, or the choke is getting stuck somewhere, I really dont know and I cant figure it out. If you need more details on what it is doing, please email me! Thanks for you help and Iwould like to start going faster that a 1 HP motor, LOL

tommy

Re: Choke?

Is the RPMs up where they normally are? If so, it's a shear pin and/or spun hub in the prop.

------------------
Time to change my tagline

Re: Choke?

Howdy, Tom. My first reaction is that you are getting fuel starvation, but I have to assume a few things for that diagnosis to work. What does the engine sound like? Does it seem to rev up but produce no thrust (spun prop hub)? Does it start and idle normally but only struggle when you ask it to go fast (failing fuel pump)? What happens if you operate your squeeze ball pump while the engine is in it's not-going-anywhere mode? Are you exaggerating when you say that it goes nowhere, and it really just puts along as though you were giving it part throttle? Have you checked your linkage to confirm that the ignition is being properly advanced by the throttle? When the engine suddenly takes off normally after one of these put-put episodes, what changes in the engine sound? Is your choke automatic or manual? Does this only happen when the engine is cold, or even when it is warmed up?

This information is sure to trigger an "AHA!!" from at least one of us on the board. Good luck.

JB

my #.02 worth.

", I rebuilt the carberuator also last year and it just started to do that. what makes this problem wiered is that all the sudden the engine will"

Some times the tickler flood valves little spring held stainless steel ball will not stay in it's seat causing the motor to run realy rich. The motor vibration makes it slide into it's seat and the motor works normal. Also the choke linkage adjusted wrong will creat the same condition. Long Shots, but seen em before. J.B. & ODDD1 may be closer to your problem. Couldn't resist
the "AHA!!" by J.B.

...have fun...corm

Re: Choke?

Well, I finally figured out the problem, it was my spark plugs, well actually it was the coil. So I am going to replace them and then I will have my two cylinders again, AHA. Thanks alot for the advice and if I see something else wrong with it, I will be sure to ask with everyones great advice. I checked everything over and I totally forgot to check the obviuos (the spark plug check) Thanks alot

Tommy
