I don't see it as out of line. You're looking at:

760lb boat +
240lb 60hp Etec +
100lb sundries (Gas, beer) +
400lbs of humans =

1500lbs total. Applying Crouch's formula and reckoning on a bottom factor of 200, you get 40mph.

Re: Choice between Merc 60 vs. ETec 60

Yes Chief, I just learned that my motor will be here in the first half of Feb. I plan to leave for CA shortly thereafter. I will post my results several times from there. Everyone I know is kind off waiting with baited breath for this motor and to learn what kind of performance I get. I did find Bill in IN's post on another string here and he is getting about 33mph w/ a 13 3/4 X 15 prop on an 18' Alaskan - AND he is propping it for trolling (0.9mph). He is convinced he could improve that with a better prop. I'm just not quite sure what size and pitch to mount just before I leave on a long trip. Kenny thinks about a 19 pitch would give me the best top end. What does anyone else think?

Paul, What is "Crouch's Formula" and where can I find it? Thanks all, keep the cards and letters coming. John

Re: Choice between Merc 60 vs. ETec 60

Paul,
Just returned from the Spokane Boat Show and talked to the Crestliner Rep. He had the Manufacturer's water test results from 2004. THey tested the '04 16ft. Angler 1600 with a Yamaha F60 and got 37mph at 5800rpm. at sea level, two adults, 10 gals gas. The '04 Angler 1400 is the exact hull from the 1600 shortened by 2ft. The beam of the 1600 is 84" (vs the 83" of the 14ft.)and it weighs 108lbs. more. How do you think the 1400 will compare. Also, I found the Crouch's formula you cited but I don't know how you decided to use 200 as the "constant". Could you email or post the source of your calculations. Thanks, John

Re: Choice between Merc 60 vs. ETec 60

Well everybody, it's now Feb 9 and no sign of my etec yet. But I AM waiting for it. Paul sent me a great email and actually used Crouch's formula to predict a 38.5mph top end with the 1400, based on the persormance of the 1600 and using that derived constant. Pretty clever. He is a terrific resource for anyone. Thanks again Paul and everyone else. I will keep you all posted on my results. Please keep this thread open for another month or so. john

John: My e-tec is on an 18' Lund Alaskan (2002 model--tiller). The prop was selected to get me down to slow trolling speed (I can get the exact size later this week). Top end is 33 mph. I believe I could do better with a different prop but I'm more interested in slow trolling capability. My trolling speed is 0.9 mph consistently. I had the dealer dial down the RPM to 600. You can see the prop go around it's so slow.

I'll get the prop size and post later this week.

Bill.

Re: Choice between Merc 60 vs. ETec 60

Well everyone, I just got the real story. The engineers at Bomb. have not approved the release of the new 60hp ETec. Mine is one of the first 400 to be shipped the first week they are cleared. My dealer is going to let me take the boat with the Johnson 40hp/4stroke on thje trip and use it until my motor comes in. A great guy - if you are in the PacNW call Tobler Marina in Hayden, ID. The owner is Brent Christian. 208-772-3255. I'm impressed. I'll keep you all posted. John

Wow, what a great dealer you have. Seems bomb should have told their dealers about this before they started taking orders.

Not yet, the dealer is letting me use the Johnson 40 4s until it comes in. I will post my receipt and experience with it if I ever get it. THe last release date my dealer got was 4/28/05 but they are going to call today to find out.

Re: Choice between Merc 60 vs. ETec 60

Well, here's the news: the release date is now August, and it will be an '06 model. Supposedly, my 7 year warranty will still apply.
Also, this boat porpoises terribly any suggestions. I don't think that just the additional power of the 60horse will solve this though because it is porpoising when the 40 horse is in the full down position.

Yes, I have tried everything to get weight forward but cannot get it to stop. I don't have room to use one of those whale tail things on the motor - may have to add trim tabs. ANy other suggestions?

trim down a little and see if it solves your problem...mine does that right now if i have it trimmed to high....I just installed tach and will be playing around with prop and motor height to solve this mystery...

Re: Choice between Merc 60 vs. ETec 60

:) :) :) :) :) :) :)
Well, the day has finally arrived! My ETec 60hp was installed today and the initial hole shot was unbelievable but top end disappointing (30mph @ 6000rpm w/ a 15" pitch aluminum prop. We switched to a 17" Stainless prop (but with smaller diameter) and got 35mph at 5600rpm but hole shot was only adequate. Local expert says the ETec likes to work and has best torque/hp curve at 5750rpm. What to do? Any Ideas?

Also, I'm looking at Michigan's Ballistic (12" diameter) and Rapture (11 3/4") props for the same 15 or 17 pitches. Does this small a difference in diameter make any difference? Is anyone running either of these props? Thanks, John
