To be correct, those cables do have to be piano wire tight. If theres any slack at all, I mean any, youre going to have a problem.

A couple of things to think about while we ponder this -- the reason we went to wing plate steering rather than to the conventional steering arm was to eliminate the mount system from the steering. Even the tiny give in the mount system caused steering / handling problems at speed.

The tunnel boats still use the aircraft cable but look where their anchor point is. It's way up towards the front. And pretty much in line with the other cable.

Fot the most part we use push pull cables on boats like yours. Most people think that we use two cables for easier steering or in case one breaks. Some people think the second cable somehow counters the torque.

Not so. We use the second cable to adjust out any slack in the first. I mean any.

Also think about safety. The harder it is to drive or the more ill handling it is, the more dangerous it is. Keep in mind the old saying about race boat drivers -- there's those that have been wet and those that are gonna get wet. Good steering is your first defense against becoming part of that saying.

Brownies, yes it is possible to have too much setback. Thats why you'll see some big setback plates for sale on the hi-perf sites sometimes.

Setback can get as involved as height. And as one changes so does the other.
