Checking Timing

Hi, I have a 68 55hp, and wanted to check timing. The flywheel is from 1970s with coarser tooth count, but seems to only have marks "a" and "b" but no degree marks. How do I check timing on this?

Thanks a lot.

Timing really does not go out of adjustment.-----What is your motor doing / not doing.-----What trouble shooting have you done if any ??

1968 was the only year for those wee teeth on the starter and flywheel.-----I doubt someone would only change out one without the other.

The A and B are the timing marks. Offhand, I can't remember which applies to the 3-cyl. But your timing light will only flash when one or the other aligns with the stationary mark----or close if it is off a bit.

Thanks. Well i suppose that without timing marks other than a single line, i couldnt do the max timing check without running the boat at wot correct?

yes flywheel was replaced with the starter. Indeed it cranks and starts just fine.

this darn thing has had a mid throttle miss since it was rebuilt 10 years ago. I have adjust low speed needles endlessly without any effect. Wot runs good, idles fine. Squeezing primer bulb doesnt change anything. Any ideas???

Have you set the points ?----Cleaned the distributor cap , rotor ?----Checked the anti-reverse spring ?-----Replaced the wee boots on the distributor cap ?

Yes, I have set and re-set the points. I have not checked the antireverse spring. The motor has a new distributor cap (new in 2008), when motor was rebuilt. The rotor was checked back then, although now that you mention it, I will check it again.

I checked points again today and one seemed a bit big on gap. I also saw a pin hole in wire boot for coil wire at stator.

what do you think of pick up leads on rotor, cap? Flywheel and stator?

thanks

slow needles were set about 1 1/2 out. I spent hours on the lake back in 2009 running it at the miss throttle position trying adjusting needles with really no effect. I ll check where the needles are currently

Hmm, this generic multimodel manual states 5/8 turn out. Sound right?

Just checked, and they are about 1.25 turns out currently

You have a sharp eye. That pin hole could very well be the problem.

And yes 5/8 turn out is the starting point.---- Final setting is close to that.-----If you need to be at 1-1/2 turn then something is wrong.

5/8 is correct to start with. 1.25 is way too much.

Great thanks. What about the leads on the cap and rotor? a few spots of corrosion. Same with the stator and flywheel, although Ive not had a problem with charging with this motor.

I can't make a judgement on those other parts. But the pin hole does suggest it has been arcing through the boot.
