Re: checking spark

remove a plug, reattach it to the boot, hold it against the engine block and look for spark while somebody turns the engine over. Use a plastic or insulated tool.

Re: checking spark

Harbor Freight sells what you need. You can search on line for it.
It's a lamp that is installed in seires with the plug wire and the plug.
It light whst the plug fires. On mine, I have replaced the with a 3/8" spark gap. You see the arc if the plug fires. That only tells you that the ignition is firing. That's a good start. Add a timming light, now you know thew ignition is firing at the right time. The wires, and plug could stil be bad. If you run it at night, you will be able to see if there is any arcking. Now throw in some new plugs. That will pretty much nail it down!

I prefer the adjustable inline gauges like the following.

Remove all the plugs. Set the gap to either 1/4" or 7/16", depending on the model. The spark should jump the gap with a bright blue ZAP!!
