How important is it to have the screen? What is the purpose of the check valve on a 1984 Johnson 15.

I am afraid I can't ansewer your question, I have never removed one. I am sure someone with knowledge about the valve will chime in and help you out.

The screen is a flame arrestor in case you get a crank-case combustion (sneezing). Has the same function as flame arrestors on cars and inboard engines. If the engine back fires through the carb, it prevents the flames from going into the engine room and setting the boat on fire!

That would make sense. I guess I'll get around to ordering a screen and putting it on sometime, good thing I'm a firefighter. Thanks.

If you think you can start it up without starting a fire, you should be okay, just to hear it run, but I would get one at your convenience.
