Check valve and filter assembly

Can someone tell me the purpose of the check valve and filter assembly on my mid 80's, Johnson 110hp outboard? It threads into the engine with about 1/4 inch diameter threads and has a very small nipple at the other end. A hose pushes onto the nipple. There is a small filter screen inside. The nipple busted off and the hose was just laying there. The motor does not run well and I was wondering it's function and could this be my issue? Thanks for input.

Sounds like a pulse limiter. Put up a pic. If it is the pulse limiter it needs to be connected to the vRo pump.

Nothing to do with the VRO pump.----Part of the oil recirculation system.-----Post the actual compression values on this engine.----They are world famous for broken piston rings.

Compression is 110 in two cylinders and 105 in the other two. I have disconnected the VRO and am running with mixed oil/gas.

Some will argue.----I would remove bypass covers to look at pistons and rings.----Cost you a few $$ for gaskets.----And at 105 PSI on my compression tester the head would come off without hesitation.
